May 10, 2023: Salvage Time

It was salvage time on Wednesday night at Wrigley, as the Cubs avoided the sweep from the Cardinals with a 10-4 victory. Whew! Imagine being swept by the worst team in the National League…

It was unfortunate enough that the Cardinals won the series; still, they sit at 13-25, a winning percentage of 0.342, dead last in the division, dead last in the NL, with only the As, who’ll be moving soon, the Royals, who actually just won a series, and the Sox, who the hell knows what’s up with them, worse in MLB. I feel so bad for Willson, thinking he was going to a better organization… no I don’t. You made your decision, now you must live with the results, including understanding why they have removed catching duties from your plate. Moving on…

The Cubs sit a game under 500. Still, I think they have been overachieving early in the year; that doesn’t say much for the rest of the year, but… we’ll take what we can get. I’m still not confident in this roster, even though we sit only 2.5 out of 1st place in a very winnable division; do we really think the Pirates will go wire to wire? The Brewers are ahead of us as well, while Cincy is Cincy… the division is a shit show for sure. This is what frustrates me even more about how the Cubs continue to slow roll it with their building back up of this team. Outside of Dansby Swanson, they’ve chosen to stand pat, add retreads, and cross their fingers, all the time while sitting on a pile of unused money. I’m sure in a couple more years the Cubs will really make their move…

We’re acting like a small-mid market team; that’s the truth. While the Mets, Yankees, Padres, Phillies, and Dodgers make up the top 5 spenders in 2023, the Cubs sit just above league average at 13th; true mid-market. You know the embarrassing part? The White Sox have even invested more in their ballclub this season! Yeah, how about their return on investment… holy shit! Still, the Cubs have more money to spend, but have chosen not to, and don’t believe they’ll be in on the Ohtani sweepstakes either; that’s a joke. It’s not all about money though, right? Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore all sit in the bottom 4 payrolls; look at how good they’re doing! The Cubs have spent more than the Cardinals though, and for that matter, anybody else in our division, so…

I want more, and I want it now; is that too much to ask? I want the Cubs to do everything in their power to put more talent on the field and get our asses back in the playoffs where we belong (look at me, one good run, and I’m expecting it now). They had done that once upon a time, in fact, in recent history, but that wasn’t good enough… to be an annual playoff participant… so they blew it up. Now, we’re just getting back to average… great. But, patience is a key virtue for us Cubs fans, so we’ll do what we do… and wait for it. Let’s hope it’s not another 108 though, because I don’t think I’ll live to 148 years old… Go Cubs.
