With the Blackhawks waiting for Anaheim and the Bulls preparing to top the Game 3 heroics, we have a second to take a peek at baseball.
The two biggest prospects in town took center stage on Saturday night. Kris Bryant hit his first home run in the majors, while Carlos Rodon got his first major league win. It had been long overdue for Bryant. I saw the graphic they flashed after the Cubs loss; the one that showed how many ABs it took Bryant to hit his first home run on each level of the minors. He hit a home run before his 5th AB in A, AA, and AAA. Tonight was Bryant’s 92nd AB in the majors. He is proclaimed to be the messiah for our Cubs, or at least the leader of all the Cubs prospects. Should we be worried that it took him almost 100 at bats to hit his first major league home run? Well, maybe if he didn’t have an OBP of over .400 and 17 RBIs through his first 21 games, I’d be worried. He’s not on that HR per series game we all expected, but there’s no reason to panic just yet. I think it’s safe to say by watching this guy play we have a good one.
As far as the Sox #1 guy…. not a bad 1st major league start. I’ve been waiting for this for a while. No, not because I’m a die hard Sox fan, but because I drafted Rodon in our fantasy baseball draft for $1. I’ve been dangling him as trade bait with no success, but now, the price just went up! It was only a matter of time really. I’m glad the Sox did it sooner than later. It’s not like he had to beat out Chris Sale to get into the rotation. He had to be better than Hector Noesi… now if he wasn’t better than him, I’d be worried. Yet, this was done because of the Samardzija suspension… either way, with Noesi going out with an injury in the first of the twin bill today, he should be a lock to stay in the rotation; he should have already been.

Looking back to last year, we were already thinking bad things about the baseball season ahead. It’s nice to have a brighter view this year. The Cubs sit 15-14… 4 games better than last year at this point. They recently were brought back down to earth by none other than the St. Louis Cardinals. Too early to challenge these hated birds. The Cards by the way… 22-8 which is good for best record in baseball. Meanwhile, the Sox sit at 11-16; this is 3 games worse than last year. This is definitely not the start the Sox coming off their best offseason expected. There is something to be said for taking time for a team to gel, but from what I hear on the radio, everybody is calling for Ventura’s head. You don’t say? I thought when they brought him in to begin with it was a stupid move, but you have to give a guy a chance right? Well, I guess that’s over, and with a team with as much talent as the Sox, you have to look at someone. I agree, and actually, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think it would be in the Sox best interest to bring back Ozzie….scary. OK… how about we wait until the quarter mark… another 13 games or so and see where they’re at… or may that be too late already? Patience Sox fans, patience…
For now, baseball serves as the sideshow in an exciting playoff season for our Hawks and Bulls. Hopefully that lasts for another month or so. Some people who will never be a sideshow are our mothers. They should be the main attraction year round… but especially today on Mother’s Day. So let all those Moms in your life know how special they are; the job they do is the most important of all. And make sure those celebrations involve turning on that TV in the afternoon for Game 4 of the Bulls-Cavs; they will understand… they always do; that’s part of what makes them so great.
