Chicago is considered a “Blue Collar” city. The term, according to a quick search, references individuals who engage in hard manual labor. I would fall into the other category. Having an office job, I would fall into the “White Collar” category. This is known as a class of employees known for earning higher average salaries doing highly skilled work, but not by performing manual labor. Blue or White, you can still have a good work ethic; you can still be a hard worker. There isn’t anything wrong with either, right?
I think of the movie Office Space; it reminds me so much of my job over the years. It’s really hilarious and spot-on in a lot of cases. The annoying boss, the team meetings passing around cake for somebody’s birthday, the TPS reports… yeah, been there done that. Yet, Peter gets tired of this after a while, and decides to move forward with a scam that will screw his company and line his pockets; OK, I don’t want to ruin the movie. OK, if you haven’t seen this movie, check it out ASAP. Anyways, when the dust clears, Peter crosses the line from “White” to “Blue” and is much happier for it. Will this be part of my path going forward?
Haha… not sure about all of that, especially at my age. You heard about “can’t teach an old dog new tricks”? Well, not saying I can’t learn any new tricks, but I feel like an old dog, especially after recently doing a day plus of manual labor. I’ll tell you what… my left ass cheek hurts; my legs are killing me. My neighbor, blue collar to the max, working for the city, fixing up the big city trucks, supervised me recently in a task that needed to be done around the house. Yeah, he had me digging a hole and filling and mixing it with concrete at the same time, among other small tasks; it was hard work… shit I’m not used to. Of course there was still the cutting & welding of the metal fence, that he was in charge of… He told me I was blue collar for the day… haha. I laughed.
Yeah, I’m much more comfortable sitting in front of my computer, doing my day job with emails and meetings, typing a blog during boring meetings, and researching information for my sports wagers here and there; I do enjoy teaching kids, like I do with my chess class and my son’s baseball team… that’s fun, gives me a little variety. I guess I wouldn’t mind mixing in some “blue collar” type tasks, but don’t really have knack for them; I do much better with some supervision in that category… like the past couple days… even though my ass is sore. Feels much better now sitting down typing… haha.
