May 1, 2018: First After First

posted in: Cubs | 1

It was May 1st, and the Cubs were in first place.  With the first month of the season in the books, the Cubs finally reached first place after a victory over the Rockies.  So much for that slow start.

While other National League teams continue to struggle, like the Nationals; they have to be better right?  Or how about the Dodgers?  Now losing Seager for the year, they could be in trouble.  The Cubs got their act together enough to be atop of he division on May 1st.   There’s still ways to go though…both with the season and with the Cubs play.

During this winning streak, the Cubs have been leaning heavily on their pitching.   They haven’t been able to score more than 3 runs during this run.   Guess it’s great to have a pitching staff, both starters and bullpen, that can carry a team.  But this certainly cannot keep up.  The pitching will not be THIS good.  Thus, the offense has to be a lot better.  With the weather finally turning, you’d expect to start seeing some of that.

Rizzo has been in the tank; he’s bound to start hitting.   Addison hasn’t been good.  I thought he’s looked better at the plate, but we just haven’t seen the results…yet.   There have been some more rumblings about Machado.  The Orioles are going to have to get something for him.   He’s walking after this year for sure.   The longer they wait, the worst leverage they’ll have.  They’ll have to rely on a desperate team at the deadline to overpay; would the Dodgers fit that category now with Seager down?

I’ve said it before; I’d grab Machado in a heartbeat.  Russell plus one should do it.  The only caveat is that he’d have to agree to an extension; although like I said previously, even if it were for a half a season, I’d be good with it.  Like Addy no doubt, but Manny…he’s a beast.

Probably still too early for trades.  Rumors now say that the Cubs are interested in an outfielder.   Hmmmm.  Where they going to put him?  Unless Heyward can be moved…  He’s been better this year.  A lot more hard hit balls…but I think what we see is what we get here.   I’m not expecting much better.  How many more years we have him?  Ok, ok…it’s worth it for the 10th inning speech alone right?

But why am I complaining right now?  The Cubs are in first after first.  Can’t ask for much more, but I will…we will.  Although we have been satisfied, we’re always wanting more.  I am happy that they’re in first place, but I’m not going to get too high or too low too early.   It’s a roller coaster of a season as it is.   Hope the pitching keeps up, and the batting wakes up, and we win a lot of games this summer.   Much, much more to come.  Go Cubs!

Cubs in first place after the first month thanks to a 5 game winning streak! Yes indeed. I like it. The pitching has been amazing during this winning streak. The hitting has been inconsistent thus far. There are games where the bats go off and others where they disappear. Yes, I am happy that the Cubs are in first place, but I still feel that there is better baseball to come. The roller coaster 162 game season is 1 month in. Hopefully, the highs continue while the lows are few and far between. Still not sure I would want machado, but I would trust in Theo if he did pull the trigger. If the Cubs could move JHey, do it. We know what he is capable of. So nice first month Cubbies! A 5 game winning streak is a good thing but all good things end…GO CUBS GO!!!
