May 1, 2016: 0 For May

I can’t believe it.  The Cubs haven’t won a game in May yet.  Time to panic?  On the flip side, the Sox are undefeated in May.  Time to celebrate?  Of course not.  After all, it’s only been 1 game.

Forget May, for the first month of the season, the Cubs and Sox have dominated their respective leagues and divisions.  We have 2 first place teams in town.  Still, it’s not time to celebrate.

We should enjoy the ride.  That’s a big one for me.  In all the ups and downs over the years, we have to really savor every up.  A month is a lot bigger chunk than one day in May, but is still only a drop in an 162 game bucket.  We just can’t help ourselves… while enjoying the ride, we’re always thinking, can it last?

Let’s start with the Cubs.  Unphased thus far by the Schwarber injury, the Cubs have been putting up a historical run differential on their way to a 17-5 April.  That run differential is just another stat to look at, in this time of sabremetrics a la number crunching.  I think numbers are very important to use, but they don’t tell the whole story.  So while the run differential is a good indicator that this first month’s success is no fluke, it by no means is a guarantee.  If you take into account the preseason predictions, which are about as good as nothing, and the success from last year, which is a better sign, you believe this can be maintained.

With the Sox, looking at the same stat, you may say they had a lucky month.  With a relatively small run differential for a 17-8 record, people may think this thing will end soon.  I guess I’ll just mention the term “winning ugly”.  That worked out pretty good back in 1983.  Although that run differential may not signal good things, again, there is no perfect formula for predicting future success.  If there was, I’d have it, and I’d be living in the Caesar suite in Las Vegas.  To my knowledge, there is no sure thing.

Of course fans of both teams want to envision this start lasting all season long with a meeting in the Fall Classic.  The Cubs get a little better test with a week full of games vs Pittsburgh and Washington to start the month.  The Sox already did pretty well against some of the other top teams, going 8-2 vs Texas, Toronto, and Baltimore.  As we see how the Cubs do against the other great teams in the NL, we see how the Sox fare against mid-level comp, although I think Boston falls in that first category.  Another telling sign seems to be how our teams fare against the teams they SHOULD beat.  This has been a struggle at times.  This wasn’t the case in April 2016.

34-13 combined record in April is pretty damn good.  Where do we go from here?  Your guess is as good as mine.

Both teams continue at this pace, they are in line for 100+ wins. Will that happen? Who knows, but neither side of town can ask for a better first month of April. The Cubs have experienced some injuries already, but they seem to be deep enough to overcome…for now. Jake and sale have been lights out…cy youngs in respective league’s? Could be. Too early to get too high or low, but I like what I am seeing and should have baseball to look forward to into the fall!
