As the College Basketball regular season wraps up this weekend, we are on the doorstep of the best time of the year. Yes, March Madness is upon us. Now, I’ve always said the first Thursday and Friday were the best 2 days of sports; I will still make that case. Being in Vegas a couple times for this time of year… yeah, it’s great. However… listening to my podcast (Follow The Money btw), they are schooling me a bit. How about the week BEFORE the tourney starts? Yes, the week of all the conference tournaments, where just like March Madness, there are games from morning to late evening, and, and… this would probably be a better time to hit Vegas… cheaper (maybe), less crowded, etc… I have to think about this a bit…
You can certainly argue against this. Tell me the Super Bowl is the best; I won’t. In the NFL, my favorite weekend is Championship Weekend. So, if that’s my feel on the NFL, then I should concur with the opinion that the conference tourney week is better than THE tourney, right? It’s a battle of teams more familiar with each other, with a history. Yes, I’m kind of feeling that. Let the conference tourneys begin!!!
What other time of year can you throw out there, in regards to sports? What about Bowl Season? Well, I’d be with you a bit IF it was like it used to be. All the major games on New Year’s Day. Now, it’s all spread out, and frankly, watered down a bit. Don’t get me wrong; I still love it, but not the same. The start of the NHL playoffs? OK, some argue this is the best postseason of all sports. I’m surely invested if the Blackhawks are a participant, and honestly, I will tune in a bit even when they’re not… more than the NBA playoffs, that’s for sure. How bad is it watching the NBA nowadays? The drive to the hole, the open layup, the decision to kick it out… makes me sick. OK, let’s stay focused. Yeah, the NBA playoffs are OK; any postseason is great, including the MLB too. I will probably watch the MLB playoffs more than both the NBA and NHL, again not counting when my teams are in there. Of course, the NFL still remains king through and through. But what other specific time of the year, a day or couple days, that is better than what is about to happen in College Basketball? I’ll hang up and wait.
Of course, it all gets a bit juicier with some action on it, except when watching my teams; I think it makes it a bit worse. Anyways, in all games NOT involving my teams, when there is a little action, the interest level increases. I don’t think I’m discussing a new concept here. But yeah, making the picks on the bracket, betting on the individual games… March in College Basketball is nothing short of phenomenal. Buckle up… let’s go!
