The NFL rears its head into the conversation today with the start of free agent season. Our Bears have already been busy.
They had already tagged Alson, which I thought was a fine move. Let’s not make this same mistake twice, and give somebody a huge contract over multiple years when he hasn’t proven himself. Now, Alshon HAS proven himself… when he’s on the field. So, it’s a little different situation. In this case, we need to find out if he can play an entire season before we pay him the motherload. Smart move.
The first FA signing came, and it was Danny Trevathan… was thinking Danny Trejo… MACHETE! Don’t know much about him besides the fact he was an important cog in Denver’s stout super bowl winning defense. Definitely an upgrade any way you look at it. Next came, Bobby Massie. At RT, does this mean Kyle Long shifts back to his all-pro position of RG? This would be a very, very good thing. We also resigned Tracy Porter to a 3 year deal. I like that move. He was definitely one of the bright spots on defense.

Then the Bears were said to be in on CJ Anderson… a running back. So I ask myself, we had Matt Forte, but we’re looking for another RB? We didn’t get CJ Anderson, so maybe that was all talk, but Forte did find a landing place. Thankfully, this place was NOT Green Bay and far, far away from the NFC; I was kind of glad it wasn’t New England either. The Jets now have him along with Brandon Marshall, the 2 best offensive players from the last decade from the Bears now play for the Jets. Funny how that goes. And the contract… 3 years 12 million. Seems pretty reasonable to me. I guess the Bears just didn’t want him… at any cost, which to me, is pretty dumb.
I don’t want to focus on the negative here, because I like the moves. Late breaking news, they resigned McManis, who was great on special teams. At the end of the day, the Bears need all the help we can get. Adding a LB and an OT is a great starting point. Still with plenty of cap room, and with the draft about 6 weeks away, let’s see Pace go to work, and get the pieces on the field that we need.
Cubs and White Sox are trying to do it. The Blackhawks are doing it. The Bulls… ugh. Time for the Bears to step up, and be relevant again in the NFL. There’s no time like the present.

Completely agree with alshon being franchised. Prove you can be a beast for 16 games in a row. This playing half a season will not work, no matter how good you are when you play.
Love the trevathan signing. A much needed linebacker with speed that can cover an rb or te. Plus, he is a great tackler so nice sign…hope he works out.
Massie at tackle is an upgrade there, which also means an upgrade at guard since long will be moving back to his normal position. Killed 2 birds with 1 stone there…very nice!
Like the porter and mcmanis resigns, too. All phases of the game need improvement.
Good luck with the jets forte. My little guy might be a jets fan now since his 2 favorite Bears have left to the jets in consecutive years…time to find a new Bears favorite…again!
