With a little more than a month to go in the NBA and NHL regular seasons, these are anxious times. Will the Bulls and Blackhawks be able to pull it together and play their best when it counts?
I’m actually pretty happy with the way the Bulls have been playing, considering they’re 3 men down. To beat the Wizards and Thunder at home was huge. To lose to the Pacers on the road was typical. To lose to the Spurs on the road was expected. Washington has been playing some pretty bad ball, and Durant was still out, but those still count as two big home wins. It was setup perfectly for the letdown in Indiana. This is how the Bulls have been playing all year, healthy, or in most cases, not. They’ve lost to inferior teams all year, although with the short handed lineup, you can argue they’re closer to equal to some of those teams, especially on the road. One team we are NOT equal to with the current lineup is the red hot San Antonio Spurs. Here’s a team I’m sure whose fans do NOT worry too much about. They have the championship pedigree. They’ve played their best when it counted in the past. They can be expected to do the same… and have been doing so the past month or so.
So we anxiously wait the return of Taj, Jimmy, and Derrick. When 100% healthy this year, the Bulls are 15-4 I believe. That’s only 19 games thus far this season for all you math majors. If that number stays around the same, the Bulls played only 25% of their games this year with 100% health. I wonder how that would compare to the rest of the league. Yet, I will hang my hat on that win-loss record. If everybody gets back on the court, and we go into the playoffs healthy, I like our chances. I just feel like I’m saying IF a lot… We have to wait and see. Like I said, anxious times.

Over on the ice, you have the Blackhawks with similar concerns. We know Patrick Kane won’t be back until late May. We know the Blackhawks have made moves to improve. We know that the Blackhawks haven’t been playing their best lately. On the other hand, we know that the Blackhawks have won it all. We know the talent level on the ice is still high. We knew all these things last year too, yet we still got knocked out by the Kings. What will this playoff run look like?
If you think about it, an NHL player is on the ice about 33% of the time, or in the case of some of your top minute guys, closer to 40%. Duncan Keith is the leader for the Hawks at 25:41 minutes per game. Patrick Kane? He was at 19:51 per game. So yeah, I know he’s a big loss… no doubt. Heck, he was the leading scorer in the NHL when he went down. Yet, he’s only on the ice a third of the time…. So what about the other two thirds of the time? You have to have other guys that score, and as the conversation at work went this morning, it doesn’t seem like that’s happening. Is everybody slumping at the same time? If that happens a month from now, Hawks will be heading home. Like I said, anxious times.
We go through this every year, especially when our teams are good. We go through the high expectations at the beginning of the season. We go through the highs with those big wins, and the lows with those horrible losses. We complain about consistency. We worry about injuries. We hope that everything comes together at the right time. As it gets closer to that second season, it gets worse… You couldn’t speed up this next month fast enough to just get there already. To get there already, and see what we’re really made of. To see if it was all worth it. To see if they can fulfill the lofty expectations. 34 games left to go between the two teams. Hang on tight… we’re almost there.

People seem to forget that there’s 2 teams out there in almost every sport. Every loss does not ‘necessarily’ mean that the losing team was playing poorly. More often than not, it means that the other team was playing well. The NHL seems to be building more ‘good’ teams. Teams that have been notoriously mediocre, have built themselves into really good teams. Win-Loss records notwithstanding, there are more good teams lately in the NHL. That means that no matter what the record shows, no team can be counted as a ‘sure win’. Like the old saying goes, “that’s why we play the games”!!!

Kane is not only the best scorer on the team, but one of the best in the league. He’s only on the ice a 1/3 of the time, but he also draws the other teams best defense when he’s out there. Now that defense can be saved for the rest of the Hawks scorers, who aren’t nearly as good. Now the hawks can’t score at all, unless you count the ones against the worst teams in the league. Crawford can’t be expected to shut every team out. Kane not on the power play which is in an 0 for 28 slump. Its a really big deal losing Kane. The Hawks record has been ok since he’s been out, but its very deceiving.
