NFL combine come, NFL combine go… and what exactly are the Bears doing at QB? We’re still hanging on by a thread here, patiently waiting… anytime now. Let’s go already.
Either way, of course, I’m riding with my team. I’ve been on the side of keeping Fields and trading the pick for a huge payback. I’m still fine with that, but if it hasn’t been done by now… I’m already prepared to accept the taking of Caleb Williams with this pick. Many folks say he’s the real deal, and although I’m not all in on him, what do I know? So then what can we get for Fields? Doesn’t sound like a whole hell of a lot. Surely we can pull a 2nd round pick for him, no? A 3rd round pick? Give me something. Surely the Bears will go one of these routes, right?
Well, the other day, my friend said draft Caleb and keep Fields; this isn’t the first time I heard this thought. In fact, I think I wrote about it before. My first reaction to that is… WTF? That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard. Why on earth would we draft the “next coming” and put him on the bench? So we draft him, he comes into camp, they compete for the job, Caleb wins it, and Justin plays from the bench? What if Justin beats him out in camp? Did we make a mistake drafting Williams? I don’t know… I just can’t see it. Well, let me try to see it.
Caleb comes in, takes his time to get used to the NFL. He plays the good teammate role, and learns the ropes behind Fields; OK, what ropes is he learning exactly? OK, I’m trying to see this. It’s not like he’s sitting behind Montana or, I hate to say it, Favre. If Caleb is as good as advertised, he should be the starter day one, period. Is it just that we can’t get anything for Fields? We just stand pat, and let it ride until a team loses their quarterback, and THEN get maximum value for Justin? OK, maybe that would work. See, I’m trying…
It’s got to be one way or another; that’s it. No way should we try this 2 QB thing. Either ride with Fields, or ride with Williams. However, since nothing has happened up until this point, you have to think this is an option. I just can’t believe that Poles hasn’t been able to get a good deal with either of the first two sensible options. If Fields’ value is that low around the league, man… that certainly doesn’t bode well; so regardless of what we think, this is what counts. I guess it tells us everything we need to know, and we need to draft Caleb with the #1 overall pick, unless the rest of the teams are just messing with us, as far as Fields’ value… taking advantage of the situation we’re in… or maybe we just overvalue him, and let our hopes blur the reality; what exactly has he done so far?
Anyways, getting excited for next year, of course. Still anxious to see which way we’re going at, you know, the most important position in football, the one we haven’t got right in forever… OK, we still trusting in Poles right? Bear Down!
