March 8, 2021: Measuring Stick

posted in: Blackhawks | 0

Are you satisfied? Three games with the 1st place, Stanley Cup defending champ Tampa Bay Lightning at the UC, and the Hawks earned three points. What did we learn from these past 3 games? At the very least, they should have served as a good measuring stick; how legit are the Blackhawks?

Well, a quick look at the standings, shows the Blackhawks in 4th place in the 2021 Central Division. This feels right. I was wrong. I didn’t think the Blackhawks were a playoff team this year; I think it’s safe to say at this point in the season, after these past 3 games against the Lightning, that the Blackhawks are a playoff team, or at the very least, they are good enough to make one of the last seeds into the Stanley Cup playoffs. They are what I thought the Bulls would be this year; a solid 7-8 seed. Bulls are essentially tied for the 8th spot in the East as of today.

Yes, the Blackhawks are legit; it’d be hard to argue that at this point. Yet, they are not an elite team, as we witnessed in these last 3 games with the Lightning. Sure, the Blackhawks played them well for the most part, but when it came down to it, the Lightning did what they had to do, beating the Hawks in 2 out of 3 games. Remember when the Blackhawks were that good? Other teams would play up to us, and we’d play down to them, but when it mattered, the Hawks had that other level, you could say, they were good enough to flip that switch. It didn’t always work out for the Hawks back then; I’m thinking about the 2014 WCF… I don’t like thinking about that. It won’t always work out for the most talented team on the ice this year either, but it’s safe to say the Lightning are one of those teams. Could we beat them in a playoff series? Sure. Is it likely? No.

I don’t know about you, but I’m happy to come to this conclusion. The potential for playoff hockey this year excites the hell out of me. Just like with the Bulls, for a lot of these young Hawks, that experience would be huge. Yeah, I know some of the boys got that bubble experience last year, and of course, there are some guys that have more playoff experience than most teams’ rosters, but for many of the Hawks, including the 5 guys who scored their first goals this year, including our goalies (damn was Subban impressive that other night), making the playoffs, playing a team that is better than us on paper in a 7 game tilt… that is priceless.

The fact that the Hawks seemed to turn the direction of this team around in one year is impressive as well. To infuse this team with young talent that plays their asses off, to see these young guys look like they belong, to see them playing hard for Colliton, these have all been very pleasing developments. Was I mad the Hawks blew a 3-0 lead in the rubber match on Sunday at the UC? Sure, I guess… a little bit, but not really. I’m excited to see the Hawks for what they are: a legit playoff team. And as they say, anything can happen in that second season; it’s more true in the NHL than any other league I believe. Keep getting better boys; give it all you got… the rest will take care of itself. Go Hawks!
