March 6, 2017: Eight is Enough

posted in: Bulls | 1

Take a good look at your number 8 seed Chicago Bulls.  After a loss in the last regular season game at The Palace of Auburn Hills, the Bulls by virtue of a tiebreaker sit in the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference.

Who can be happy with that?  Well, considering we pathetically missed the playoffs last year, just getting back in the dance is positive, right?  Maybe some young, up and coming team who is about to make the playoffs for the first time in a long time would be good with just making it.  Maybe eight is enough in these cases.  But for our Bulls?  Nah, this just sucks.

And as the time ticked off the clock, and I look at FredBerg’s face, I see no answers. He has nothing. Shouldn’t he be coaching the Cyclones to a first round exit in the NCAA tourney this month?  He’s horrible.

The postgame interviews with this dude are a broken record, kind of like the Bulls in general. I’ve noticed a pattern. In seemingly winnable games, the Bulls will jump out early. They’ll hold a lead in the first half, but by the time the games rolls towards the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth quarter, they assume the position. The younger teams outlast them. They wear them down. The younger, more athletic Bulls cannot keep up.  We’ve seen this way too often.

Yeah, so Payne scored some points. I’m not impressed. Wade and Rondo both missed their 10th game of the season. I’m not surprised. Watching Baynes from the Pistons fly in and dunk on us was surprising.  He’s an Aussie, and who else but Luc Longley was in the house for this one to watch him. Ah, the good old days seem so far away.

One game under 500, clinging to the 8th spot is the definition of NBA purgatory. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bulls missed the playoffs altogether.  It really doesn’t matter either way, although they sure collected that money for the first two rounds of the playoffs from the season ticket holders.  I remember those come out early. I have a feeling there may be an opportunity to get in on a season ticket plan next year.  I can see a lot of people dumping.

Then, maybe then, the sellout streak would be over.  Then, maybe then, will Reinsdorf (is it the son who is calling more shots now?) get the picture. I would love to hit those bastards in the pocket book, and make them feel some of this pain. They don’t care. They really don’t.

And that sucks for us.  But what choice do we have?  Root for another team?  You obviously haven’t read me before. It’s Bulls no matter what.

The Pistons honored Laimbeer and Mahorn at halftime of this one; again, bringing me back to a much better time. The young and hungry Bulls battling the Pistons for years at the top of the East.  Those were the days.

I still feel like Uncle Rico talking about it; I just can’t stop dwelling on the glorious past of the Bulls.  I’m reminded every time in the UC with the 6 banners hanging in the rafters, and the 6 trophies in the glass case in the concourse.  Maybe I had it all wrong. Maybe it’s really six is enough, because I’m not seeing numbers 7 or 8 anywhere in our future. When do the Blackhawks play again?

Tough to have hope for a team that looks hopeless. Fredberg has no answers, just like trestman years ago with the Bears. Guys just going through the motions. Playing the rest of this season out with no chance of winning a title. Why make the playoffs then? Do players and coaches receive a bonus for that? I know the organization would. The Bulls are a mess, from the top all the way down. Nobody seems to have answers. Nobody seems to know what direction the Bulls should go in. When will this change? Is making the playoffs an improvement this year? It might be based on not making them last year, but it sure would feel pretty damn empty. We need some hope, a ray of light that shows us something. Otherwise, us fans tend to go through the motions just like the team, and there is only so much of that that can be tolerated.
