I tried to do a feature on gambling on this blog before; it didn’t really stick.  I mean, if I wasn’t wagering real money on games, what do my picks mean anyways?  I tried to do the whole fantasy football feature too; that got boring quick.  How about one about poker?  Man, do I have stories to tell, but, I really don’t play any more, besides on a Valentine’s Day gift from the wifey… little hand held poker game.  I remember playing on one of those on the plane on the way to Vegas; my buddy ended up owing my $200 before we landed.  Yeah, we were degenerates back in the day; times have changed.

I can’t really remember the last time I was in a casino.  Usually my wife and I would go every once in a while; play a few slots, donate some of our hard earned money.  No, the last time I was in a casino was last year in Vegas when we went to see my father in law.  OK, so it had to be about 8 months then…  Who would have thought I would end up in a casino in Baltimore?  When I was told it was close to the hotels the people I was meeting with out there were staying, I already had that bug in my head; I would find a way to stop there at some point during the one night I got to hang out.  And I did.

It was a really nice casino too; lot nicer than some of the ones around here.  The main reason I wanted to check it out was because I was told it had a nice poker room; I can confirm.  I sat down for a quick minute.  1-3 no limit was the game; there’s no other game other than no limit right?  I sat down with a hundo, and figured I’d give it a quick shot.  Guys had big stacks, and were throwing chips around.  I was in for $10 when a guy after me bumped it for $30 pre flop.  There was one other caller.  I tossed in my J-9 off suit.  Of course the flop came K Q 10.  I was sick.  Bets were huge; I would have cleaned up.  Usually after a hand like this, I would melt down; I would do something stupid… go on tilt.  But I didn’t; I maintained.  I won a few hands later when I threw some money at a pot nobody really wanted; I took it down.  OK, my first win.  Then I was dealt the powerful 6-5.  There was a raise to $10 pre flop; I called it.  Flop came 8 5 5; a monster flop for me.  I threw another $10; I had 2 callers.  Turn came a king.  I decided to bet $30; guy next goes all in.  Next guy folds.  Obviously I called immediately, and watched as the guy’s King went up in flames.  I more than doubled up.  I sat for another hand or two, then decided it was time to go.  Not bad… walking away up about $70.

I think I’d like to do a feature like this, but only if I was playing cards more often.  But enough about that.  My trip was almost over; time to get back to Chicago.

Poker, hold’em, and cards in general. So many stories to tell, so many different hands played, variations of games, and a ton of crazy nights drinking and playing. The best games were the at home ones, but there are Vegas and casino stories, too. One recent one for me was flopping a straight flush playing hold’em in Vegas…made an automatic $200 plus whatever I won in the hand. What a great feeling! There is nothing like playing hold’em in Vegas…cards, talking to people from all over, and drinking for free.
6-5 winner winner…hahaha, rags to riches! I wish I played a lot more than I do, but I have had many past years of playing weekly. I used to keep a spreadsheet of my winnings, too…hahaha. The good old days…shuffle up and deal!
