March 31, 2019: Early Reflections

posted in: Cubs | 0

So the baseball season is off and running, and the Cubs offense looks great… and… the Cubs offense looks great.  Yeah, pitching, not so much.  Let’s go over a few early reflections.

Where was this fricking offense at the end of last year???  Geez, would have took half as many runs… shit, even a third… and we would have won the division, avoided the wild card, and scored enough runs to win the World Series.  OK, maybe a stretch, but 28 runs in 3 games?!?!  Can’t ask for much more from the offense.  For God’s sake, almost everybody had an RBI on Sunday.  10 runs should be enough to win most games; 6 runs should be enough to win most games.  But it wasn’t, and now, the Cubs sit at 1-2.

No time to jump out the window.  I know there is supposed to be more urgency this year; avoiding falling into an early hole… limiting early season slumps…  playing each game as if it’s September.  Easier said than done, and certainly there is no need for craziness after one series, but the bullpen certainly looks shaky.  Edwards, Montgomery, Strop… name a guy in the bullpen we are supposed to rely more than them.  Cishek?  Anyways, if these guys aren’t going to pitch well, it’s going to be a long season.  Does that mean the Cubs should go out and sign Kimbrel ASAP?  I wouldn’t mind it, but… maybe we need to chalk these performances up.  Now if they turn into a trend, then…

It’s not only the bullpen.  What about Yu?  If I read correctly, he threw 51 pitches before a ball was put into play; is that right?  I didn’t see any of Saturday’s game, but wow!  I did hear the ump was squeezing him, but… what this means is that he’s trying to be too perfect; I think the same for Cole on Sunday.  Trying so hard to hit your spots… trying to throw that pitch just outside the strike zone to get them to chase.  Can’t be that cute.  Throw strikes… early in the count… not on a silver platter with a 3-2 count and the bases juiced… or even with one guy on 3rd base with 2 bases open.  Don’t “give in” to a batter, but more importantly, don’t put yourself in those situations regularly.  Yu has to do much better; Cole does too.  Quintana pitched nicely in his relief effort; why did we bring him in again at that point?  And then there’s Chatwood…  ugh.

Pitching was supposed to be a strength… at least the starting five.  Looking forward to seeing that turnaround starting with Monday’s game in Atlanta with Kyle on the bump.  Need to put these early blunders behind us as soon as possible, and get them next time out.  No time to dwell; it’s time to perform.  Let’s not let this drag on for weeks… all month, because then… well, I don’t want to see then.  Let’s focus on making this first road trip of the season a winning one.  Go Cubs!!!
