Opening Day 2020 has come and gone; there is no baseball. Season cancelled? Hopefully only postponed. When will we see baseball again? Xfinity means no Marquee, which really sucks; the people who have it, at least have something to tide them over. I’m certainly not going to watch White Sox classics… Yes, I’ve had to resort to watching classics on MLB network; they did show the 2016 Series too, so I guess I’m not completely empty. There is always YouTube…
I’ve seen other classics… old Randy Johnson performances, a Tigers Twins matchup… it’s not the same. I miss Cubs baseball. I miss being at Wrigley. How would we live in a world without baseball? What about my son’s baseball league and his promising career? What about my blossoming coaching career? I don’t think I would have made it without baseball…
Surely this is the worst thing right now, I told my wife. More tragic than all the deaths, the people that are sick, all the unemployed folks right now; surely I jest. It IS worse than the interruption of the basketball and hockey season; who really gives a shit… the Bulls and Blackhawks were both out of it. Couple their seasons with last year’s Bears performance, that seems like years ago at this point, and you understand why we couldn’t wait for baseball. Yes, even White Sox fans had something to look forward to this year. Heck, all teams start off undefeated… the one time when hope springs eternal… zapped from us. Yes, surely baseball will return at some point…
June 1st? All Star break? 100 game season? 81 game? Give me something, anything. Play into November? I have some good November baseball memories… really good memories. I’ll take that. It doesn’t really matter, just give me baseball back.

We’ll be back out there again soon… catching, pitching… we’ll figure out the hitting. We will have our baseball. A baseball board like game for his birthday; we will find a way. A new Cubs jersey? Check. He will wear it in Wrigley some day.
The bucket list item will remain open for the time being, with another Opening Day passed… another opportunity to attend the first game of the season. But wait… will it still count if we could to the first game of THIS season, whenever that may be? Sure, right? It’s kind of like my rain out question with the other stadiums; if the game gets rained out, do I still count it on the list of stadiums visited? Tough questions these days I tell you…
Yeah, that makes me happy. Although the money we’d have saved could all be spent on those tickets… regardless of everything, and the apprehension to get back to whatever the new normal will be, I will bet that Wrigley will be packed on that day… probably the warmest Opening Day in Wrigley history. The tickets will be expensive, and worth every penny… although probably could save half the cost by going to the 2nd game… I miss those decisions
Soon enough I say… and when we look back at this, and kids read about this in their history books, hopefully we’re talking about a small window of time in the big scheme of things. Hopefully the new normal is a good normal. As long as baesball is a part of that, as long as we can go to Wrigley to see the Cubs play, I’m good…
