March 30, 2018: Opening Memories

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

This year’s Opening Day will be one to remember for the Cubbies, with the first pitch HR and all.  On the other side of town, there was a pretty memorable Opening Day performance too.

Matt Davidson hit 3 long balls in the Sox opening day win.  I immediately scooped him up in my fantasy league, ignoring the no Sox rule.  While I was at it, I also scooped up Chacin from the Brewers, ignoring my no Brewers rule.  Both will be on the trading block at some point.  The 3 home runs of course reminded me of another Opening Day…

It was the Tuffy Rhodes game of course.  3 home runs on Opening Day 1994 off Doc Gooden at Wrigley.  I remember it well.  He came out of nowhere, and now would be the Cubs next big star.  Well, that wouldn’t happen, and this game, would be the peak of his career.

Another Opening Day memory I have is the Kosuke Fukudome debut.  I was in LA at the time, and I was at home to watch this game.  I was watching in our apartment, and yelled loudly when he hit the game winning HR.  What a debut!  That year would be a special year for the Cubs, that ended just like all the special years before then.  Still, lots of fun that year, and it all started with Kosuke’s walk off.

The only other Opening Day memory that comes to mind has to do with the White Sox.  It was my freshman year in high school.  The tradition at that time was to walk from our school to Comiskey Park for Opening Day.  It was about 8 miles to the park… We walked straight down Western Ave to McKinley Park, then veered down Archer, I think, to 35th and down to the park.  This year was a little different though…

It was the first game in the NEW Comiskey Park.  After finishing our walk, we were given Bleacher tickets to the game.  It was vs the Tigers, and it would be ugly.  The Sox got pounded; we left in the 6th inning I think.  I still have that ticket stub somewhere; maybe some Sox fan would be interested in it one day.

That was the only Opening Day game I ever attended.  Going to one at Wrigley is still on the bucket list.  It’s funny how “important” Opening day is.  Specific ticket prices for opening day could be $200; the next day, that same ticket, could be $50.  Like a lot of things, I’ll probably wait until my son is a little older, and head to my first Opener with him.  Ideally, it would be the day they raise another banner, since I missed it in 2017.

So it could be next year then, huh?  Why not?  Yes, the Cubs couldn’t follow up their opener with a second win; the undefeated dream is already over.  That was a long game by the way… I was fighting it, and I may have missed a few batters, but I did see the end.  160 games to go… and one home opener.  Go Cubs!

Matt Davidson definitely created some Opening Day memories with a 3 homer game and a sox victory. Yes, tuffy rhodes hit 3 bombs in his opening day debut, but the Cubs lost that game 12-8. Tuffy would only hit 5 more all year before heading to japan to set their single season home run record of 55 in 2001. Overall, he hit 464 homers in Japan, most ever by a foreign born player. As for Fukudome, his home run was actually a 3 run game tying homer as the Cubs were trailing 3-0 to start the 9th. Unfortunately, the Cubs would go on to lose 4-3 in extras. Opening Day 2017 has to be my favorite as the Cubs started the year as World Series champs and got to raise their banners! What a special night! Happy’s first pitch bomb will be remembered this year as it kicked off the even year title season! GO CUBS GO!!!
