March 29, 2019: And It Begins

Ahhh… Baseball is back.  The Cubs are back.

I don’t care how old I get.  I’m not going to apologize for feeling excited for this day.  As soon as I woke up on this Opening Day 2019, I was feeling it.  Since I had some stuff to do in the morning, and would be getting to work late today anyways, I made the executive decision to make this a work from home day.  That way I would be home to watch the game.  I would go with my wife to scoop up my son from school, and listen to the top half of the first inning with Pat and Ron.  I waited in the garage to hear the last of the Baez AB, hoping for a boom right off the bat.  Nope.  OK, I can go inside now.

The booms came for Baez, who kick started the Cubs offense with 2 HRs; good for my fantasy team too!  I didn’t see either of them live.  WTF?  Yeah, since I was home early, and since it was nice outside, I took the opportunity to celebrate this Opening Day by going outside with my son to play catch for the first time this year.  It’s a big year for him.  He goes to play with the big boys this year… 7-9 year olds; he’s just about to turn 7.  That means he’ll be one of the youngest kids in the league this year.  This is also the year he’ll play with the real league ball.  In the 4-6 league, they played with the softer league ball.  So, that means he’ll really need to be able to catch.  It didn’t take long for him to start snagging everything.  I was glad.  It was a good first catch outside.  As long as the weather holds, this will start to become part of our normal routine.  I’ll need to get to the park to pitch to him too, so he can get his swing back.  It’ll be the first time he’ll be hitting a real league ball too; I’m thinking the ball should go further than the softer version.  Not so worried about that; he always liked hitting pitching better than off the tee.  My wife actually peeked out to tell us about the 2nd Baez bomb; I had seen the first on my phone.  By the time we got back inside, the Cubs were romping; that’s what I’m talking about.

It was a great start to the season.  Getting that first W… a whole lot better than an L.  Love the offensive outburst; it was especially great to see remembering how last season ended.  I’m expecting big things from the Cubs this year; forget about all that 3rd place crap.  Regardless of what the other division teams have done, they are still not as good as the Cubs… biased, yes, truth, yes.  I can’t wait to see the Cubs remind everybody who the best team in the majors the last 4 years has been.  Yeah, go ahead, look it up.  1 down, 172 to go.  Go Cubs!!!
