March 29, 2017: Beasts of the East

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

I used to like that term:  Beasts of the East.  Could be used to describe any professional sports team from the East; even an NCAA team.  I remember when the Bulls were the Beasts of the East, ruling the Eastern Conference throughout the 90s.  Think it was used in the Big East conference too; Hoyas back in the day, maybe.  Anyways, this discussion of great teams from the east brings us to the NHL, and the Hawks latest opponent on Wednesday evening.

The mighty Pittsburgh Penguins… yeah, ok.  Yeah, they’re banged up, they’re missing a lot of guys, they’d been hot at home were bound to lose one… roll out the excuses all you want.  All I know, is that the Hawks reminded me of why I am not worried about any team from the Eastern Conference.  It was a first round knock down, that the Penguins never recovered from.  It was over quickly.

Or was it?  The Hawks blew a lead in their last loss; would they hold on to this one?  The answer was yes.  4 goals in the 1st period was enough.  It sucked to give up the shutout, but we’ll take it.  5-1 was the final.  Like I said, it was never close.

Kane didn’t light the lamp, but he was busy doing his thing with 2 beautiful assists.  The one behind the back to Bread Man, and the touch, deflection pass to Kruger.  They were both things of beauty.  Panik scored his 22nd of the season; yes, that’s not a typo.  Hossa put in his 25th, and Kero scored on a breakaway, after a nice defensive play.  It was an overall thorough beat down of one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, on their home ice.

Columbus?  Young and upcoming, same number of points as the Hawks as of now.  Great team, no doubt.  Would I be worried playing them?  No.  Like I said, bring on anybody.  Like I said, it’s going to be tougher just getting out of the West.

But sitting atop the West, are the Hawks:  The Beasts of the West?  Doesn’t exactly have the same ring to it.  Maybe The Best in the West?  That’s more like it.  While the Wild figure out where the wheels came off, the Hawks steamed to the top of the West.  Reminding everybody who the favorite, again, is to win it all.  I wouldn’t put my money anywhere else.

Yep, a beat down of the Penguins is what happened on Rivalry Night on Wednesday.  Next up?  It doesn’t matter.  Go Hawks!

Bhawks gave the pens a beatdown in their own building. Yes, maybe nobody scares us from the east because we dont see them that much. A thorough destroying of the reigning champ pens does not bring much fear. The caps? Yeah, how many times have we seen this from them? A great regular season followed by an early playoff exit. Maybe they are due, but I will take the Bhawks chances in a 7 game season. The jackets, habs, anyone else. I guess no need to worry about someone until we play them. The west will be tough as it always is, but the Bhawks are the best in the west and will have home ice throughout. Bhawks vs anybody in a 7 game series. Finish these last few games, stay healthy, and get ready to score for four…Cups that is!
