March 28, 2021: Business Not Personal

posted in: Cubs | 0

Man were there a bunch of whiny bitches after the Cubs decided to start Nico Hoerner off in the minor leagues to start the 2021 season. Obviously playing the service time card, people were outraged, after Nico’s hot spring resulted in this. I don’t know… I’m not really pissed. I mean, hasn’t anyone ever seen the Godfather? It’s business not personal, and you’re taking it very personal.

I get it though; that’s what we do. We take this thing, this fandom, very personal. We call them OUR teams; we include ourselves when we talk about how good or bad WE did last night. I’m fine with that; that’s exactly how I feel. I sometimes feel like I want my teams to win more than the players, like that makes that much of a difference in my day to day mood. I say screw the owner, manager, and player on one of my teams whenever I want, because I can, yet I’ll always support them as long as they wear the uni. Yes, die hard, get it? All those guys will come and go, but fans, the true ones, will always be there. That’s another thing I get a kick out of… my team did a stupid move, I’m done with them. My team supports this cause I’m done with them. This player did this, I’m done with that team. You’re either a fan or you’re not, period. If you’re uttering those words about your team, you probably never really were one. Yes, I may feel total frustration, get very, very angry, but not for one second do I ever think about not supporting MY teams. Anyways…

But this Nico thing… so what? We did it to Kris Bryant, and now we’re going to cause an uproar? It happens throughout the league, because it CAN; you ever heard of don’t hate the player hate the game? Yeah, it’s like that. If this tactic is SO bad SO unfair, then the MLB needs to change something to not allow teams to do it. Until then, teams, including MY teams, are going to do the smart thing from a business front. I do not like thinking about my teams in business terms, but I’m old enough to understand it now. You think I like all the moves that my teams make? Trading guys, letting them walk, not extending them… Heck no. I wish I could play GM and do all the stuff I think is best, but most of that would be coming from my heart, and not my head; that’s why I was never any good at gambling, because I always bet with my heart. There are guys in charge of the business side of things for our teams that are going to do the right move from that perspective, whether we like it or not.

At the end of the day, we’ll see Nico in a couple weeks. If he wants to stay pissed about it, if he IS pissed about it, then that’s on him; hopefully he doesn’t take it personal. Regardless of what the Cubs say the reason is, it was 100% due to the service time thing; it was a business decision Nico, not personal. Hopefully he gets it; hopefully the fans get it. Don’t have to like it, but understand it. Go Cubs!
