March 27, 2021: The Big Thud

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 0

For a day that brought so much promise in Chicago sports, Saturday certainly felt like a big thud after an 0-3 record was turned in.

It started with Loyola. Unfortunately, or fortunately as it turned out, I wasn’t able to watch the game, but after seeing only 16 or so points scored in the first half, I knew it wasn’t good. I was checking on my phone as they pulled within 6 points late in the 2nd half; they could never get over the hump, and fell to the juggernaut that is Oregon State. Oregon State? WTF Loyola? You take down our best in-state chance, and then you lose to those scrubs? I was definitely shocked for the 2nd straight Loyola game. Anyways, go underdogs from here on out in the tourney.

Next game up was the Blackhawks, featuring the return of Kirby Dach. Coming off 2 huge wins against the Panthers, hosting the Predators, getting Kirby back on the ice, the mojo seemed to be flowing. Urnnn, wrong. The Predators pulled within 2 points in the standings and the final playoff spot that the Blackhawks currently hold with a 3-1 victory. They’ll be right back at it on Sunday night; bounce back time.

Finally, the Bulls… man was I ready to see the Bulls kick some ass on Saturday night. We had beat up on the Spurs before spectacularly blowing the lead at the UC, and now we have our new guys, including Vooch; I think I’ll go with that nickname for now. When the Bulls passed the ball down to him on the post and he converted his first bucket, I was hyped up. Yeah, that’s how you do it. Well, the Spurs didn’t cooperate, and did pretty much whatever the hell they wanted against our defense, winning 120-104. The Bulls didn’t give up and made it closer than it actually was, but man was that a dud. They now fall 2 games back of the final playoff spot in the East. Golden State is up next in a late night Monday tilt; guess I’ll have to wait for that one to see the first victory for the revamped Bulls.

The Bulls and Hawks live to fight another day, while the Ramblers are done. With baseball right around the corner, we’re coming up on one of the best times of the year, when 3 sports are going on simultaneously. With the renewed hope brought by Opening Day coupled with the fight for the playoffs in basketball and hockey, it’s time to sit back and enjoy. I’m feeling OK about all my teams right now, except for maybe the Bears, although I don’t believe they’re done shaping next year’s roster yet. I do believe they will draft a QB at the very least. With the Blackhawks outperforming their pre-season expectations, the Bulls finally making big moves, and the Cubs heading into this season completely off the radar, I’m excited; yes, there are the Sox too, hoping to capitalize on year 2 of their just opening window. It’s not a bad time to be a sports fan in Chicago; it never is.
