March 26, 2022: Setting the Bar

Sometimes you just have to look at stuff from a different perspective… Let’s take the 2022 Cubs for example. I’m still pissed by the way, because we were sold another BS bill of goods. Let’s dump our 3 best players, but yeah, we’ll replace them in the offseason with some star power; that didn’t happen. I would have been OK had the Cubs signed a big name free agent; Stroman and Suzuki are nice, but not big name by any means. Sure, Stroman may be the #2 pitcher in our rotation; yeah, I’m not putting him ahead of Kyle. Honestly though, Stroman is probably at best a #3; I hope I’m wrong. His rise to the #2 spot is more a commentary on the state of the Cubs starting pitching than his skills. Suzuki, yeah, great… he has put up some impressive numbers overseas. How many of these guys pan out though? Sure, Ichiro, but then… who else? Hideki Matsui was pretty solid; Hideo Nomo maybe. The fact that over the past couple decades we can count them on one hand, well, doesn’t bode well. Feeling lucky?

Bottom line, the Cubs are back to being the sorry ass Cubs, stashing all that dough, this time to go buy a soccer club across the pond, rather than investing it into the product on the field. The Cubs are going to suck this year, period. That brings me to how I’m going to change my perception on the whole thing. It’s not like the Cubs are any good, and there is pressure to perform… the expectations are sky high. Nope, those days are gone until further notice. We won’t be disappointed in frankly anything that happens this year; no more disappointed than we were when they blew this perennial playoff team up to save money. That’s going to sit there for quite a while… No, anything that the Cubs do well this year will be a happy surprise. Yes, I’m setting the bar really low for the 2022 Cubs, so low that I cannot be let down. This bar will be set so low, that a 500 season will feel like a World Series title. They’re not going to finish over 500; I don’t care how many games we get to play against the Pirates and Reds. Even with those two teams in our division, I don’t think finishing in the basement of our division is out of the question. Yeah, the bar is THAT low.

You see, that way, when the Cubs win a few games, when they go on a nice little 4 game winning streak, I’ll enjoy the hell out of it. Wow, didn’t expect this! Hey, this team isn’t all that horrible! These guys are making it fun again! I’m leaving the door wide open for something like that to happen this year. Yes, it’s stripped back to the basics, down to the bare bones, of just watching the Cubs because I’m a die hard fan. Watching the Cubs because they’re MY team. Going to Wrigley because it’s the best place on earth to watch a baseball game. Going to see the Cubs on the road, because we get to check off another stadium. Yeah, my Cubs baseball enjoyment will NOT be ruined by the Ricketts, Hoyer, or anybody else. I’m going to get my happiness somehow, some way this summer dammit… until the Cubs trade Willson Contreras of course… it will get worse before it gets better…
