March 26, 2016: Since You’ve Been Gone

Doesn’t it seem like the Hawks haven’t played in forever?  OK, so it was only 4 nights since the Stars pounded the Hawks and made us think twice.  Think about it all you want, anything is better than watching the Bulls these days.  Since then, the Bulls have been beaten by the Knicks in back to back games; they also played the Magic before the Hawks finally took the ice again on Saturday night in Calgary.

But first it was another wonderful Bulls game.  I actually slept in on Saturday… sort of.  I was up at 5:30, but then went back to sleep an hour later until 8:30.  I felt pretty good.  Some family time was followed by a late afternoon early evening nap.  From about 4:30 to 7:30, my household was sleepy hollow.  As I was coming to, I checked the TV, and it was halftime of the Bulls game… and they were already down 18 points.  Really?

Yeah, so they made a little run… made the game a game for a little bit, before the Magic took off again.  The Magic were playing shorthanded, and coming off a back to back.  The Bulls were at 100% besides Gasol… and of course Noah.  We still got creamed.  With a date on Monday night with Atlanta, who has kicked our ass all year, the playoffs are becoming more and more of a pipe dream.  Still can’t believe how far this Bulls team has fallen since last year.

Then the Hawks returned to the ice.  Thank you Jesus.  A Ladd goal followed by a Shaw deflection had the Hawks up 2-1 going into the 3rd.  I was able to watch a little hockey, and see the Hawks ice it with 2 empty netters, and a 4-1 win.  That’s more like it.

It would be cool to watch the Hawks play in Canada.  Besides the handful of cities in the US where hockey matters, Chicago being one of them, hockey is far from king.  Even in those cities, the other sports are bigger.  I think Boston, Philly, Chicago, New York for example, and in every one of those cities, there are other teams that trump their hockey team.  Yes, even how good the Blackhawks have been, even though they should be far and away kings of this city, the Bears and Cubs top them.  Nothing personal, that’s just the way it is.  Back to a game in Canada… hockey IS king.  That’s where I want to watch a hockey game.  How about a trip across Canada catching a handful of Hawks games?  That sounds pretty damn good.  I’d love to see Calgary.  I’d love to go to the place where the play Sunday night too:  Vancouver.

It would be fun; the closest trek would put us in Toronto, which would be cool.  An Original Six matchup can never be bad.  I imagine the ticket prices are just as bad as in Chicago… maybe even worse?  Even though Toronto has sucked for a while, hockey tickets are still hot.  Would I be able to get into the building for under $100?  Add it to the bucket list:  a Blackhawks game in Canada.

I’ll have to settle for the tube again Sunday night.  With a win Sunday night, the Hawks will clinch a playoff berth for the 8th straight year.  Was it ever in doubt?  Well, if you told me the Bulls would miss the playoffs this year, I would have called you crazy.  Now the Hawks missing?  That, ain’t, happening.  Go Hawks… you may be the only UC tenant playing in the postseason this year.
