A day with no Bulls or no Hawks brought three signings by our Bears. It’s been one of the busiest offseasons in recent history.
Quick recap, as if you need it… new GM, new coach, new OC, new DC… for starters. I guess when you replace most of your management team, you should expect big changes. I guess when you have a horrible season, you should expect big changes. I guess when you have a lot of needs, you should expect big changes. The Bears get a check mark in each one of those boxes.
Defense has been the biggest area of change; to say we needed some new blood on the defensive side of the football would be an understatement. The first item of note was the walking papers given to Lance Briggs; I don’t think anyone was surprised. I am surprised that the same hasn’t been done to Peanut… yet. Then the signings began. The Bears did sign a bunch of guys last year… Jared Allen, Willie Young, Lamar Houston. I guess 1 for 3 isn’t bad; yes, it is bad. Let’s start the count for this year. LB Pernell McPhee from the Ravens was signed. He is a great pass rushing LB with the 2nd most QB hits in the league last year, but the only problem is he has never started a full season. Next, S Antrel Rolle was picked up. I always liked him; is he related to Samari Rolle? Now that was a good CB back in the day. I do think Rolle was a solid signing; I mean, anybody with a pulse would be an upgrade over our current safeties. By the way, Chris Conte went bye bye too; please hold down the applause. That brings us to the trifecta of signings completed today by our boys.
DE Ray McDonald, DE Jarvis Jenkins, and LB Mason Foster. You may have heard of the first guy… and no, not because you like to eat there. Ray McDonald was in the news last year for all the wrong reasons. Another suspected Ray Rice woman beater, McDonald was cut by the Niners. We were there to scoop him up. He has never been found guilty of this most recent charge, or of the previous one. Where there’s smoke there’s fire? I’m sure you have your opinions. You OK with the Bears signing him? The next 2 guys I never heard of. I was hoping when I read Jenkins that Kris Jenkins was still playing in the league, and the Bears signed him. He was a beast back in his day, with Carolina, with John Fox. Nope, it’s Mr. Jarvis Jenkins from the KC Chiefs. If you knew who this guy was, kudos; you know more football than me. The final signing was Mason Foster. I read a quick article on him, and thought this may be a sneaky signing; the low risk high reward type. Only signed to a one year deal, I’m thinking he may be able to start for us next year. It’s not like our LBs are lighting the world on fire.

The change on defense has also been prompted by a scheme change, let’s not forget. Going from the 4-3 to the 3-4 is a big deal. Personally, and I think I mentioned this before, I’m excited to see it. I’m excited to see ANY defense better than the one we fielded the past 2 seasons. I’m excited to see anybody coordinate the defense NOT named Mel Tucker. I think Fangio knows what he’s doing, and I’m ready to watch them play. We may need a playbook to follow all the new faces on defense, and the new alignments, but hopefully it will all be worth it.
The offense has had some change as well. We’ve replaced Brandon Marshall with Eddie Royal; I’m not thinking this was an upgrade. I was OK with BMarsh being let go if his butt buddy Cutler was going with him. Since it was only him that was shipped out, I was a little disappointed. And, nothing against Eddie Royal, a solid #3 WR, but he’s no Marshall. I wonder if the Bears are thinking about drafting a WR first round. I hope not. Regardless of all the additions on defense, that is still our area of biggest need. That, and drafting a QB for the future…
So you got all your Bears info now? Do you care right now in the middle of the Hawks and Bulls push for the playoffs, and on the brink of the promising Cubs Sox seasons? The Bears are ALWAYS on the brain. They’re always relevant on the sports landscape in this city, and lately, they have been busy Bears. I’m happy. It was needed. After you mix it all together, will it come out looking good? I’m not quite worried about that… yet. There are still more ingredients to add.

You have to be happy that the Bears are making moves. Whether or not you agree or think they are good does not matter. Only time will tell. They are not done yet with the draft to come and maybe some more signings and releases. Change was what we asked for, and we got it. Hopefully, the moves will work, not just with the coaching and orginizational moves, but with the trades, releases, and new signings. Draft day will be big for the Bears, too. I am still hoping they go D 1st round, but maybe with all of our signings so far, we target a top wr. Either way, I am looking forward to the new look Bears later this year. Football season is always exciting and with all of the changes made, the Bears have definitely not been sleeping this winter!
BEAR DOWN!!!

I like what thy are doing, Royal is a good #3 and the new coaching hires are a plus. If they draft a WR in the first round, they will need to trade up to get Amari Cooper or Kevin White, which is not likely to happen. Chances are good drafting Devin Smith and he would make a good #2.
Peanut needs to be offered a 1year deal or just make him a coach. I really believe he can make a good teacher. Defensive drafting is key. The D line needs some youth and speed. As for the QB position, draft in the later rounds but keep him away from the CBC, we don’t need him rubbing off on anyone.
The Bears can go several ways, but the only true way to rebuild is via the draft. Listed below are some players on defense, I hope the Bears go after (later rounds)
DE: Anthony Chickillo, Ray Drew
DT:Ryan Russell
CB: Justin Cox
LB: Taiwan Jones
and one RB on my list who would fit nicely with Forte: Malcolm Brown
and QB of future: Garrett Grayson
