March 24, 2019: College Basketball

I watched more college basketball in the last 4 days than I have all year; that’s why they call it March Madness. It’s like your lifelong friends. When I was telling my son the other day on the way to school about two of mine, the ones that I’ve known since kindergarten, he was like “really?” I said yeah, and that there may be a couple of kids in his first grade class that he may be friends with for life; that’s crazy to think about. When it comes to these type of friends, you may not have seen them all year, but when you do, it’s like you just talked to them the day before; you pick right back up where you left off. It’s been like that this weekend with college basketball. It’s like I’ve been watching all year long.

There were some fun games. The LSU last second win was fun on Saturday. As soon as we watched them win, my son wanted to play basketball; he wanted to be LSU. It reminded me of my youth. My brother and I would always try to reenact what we saw on the court. Whether it was two teams against each other or two individuals, we’d play it out on our nerf hoop; my son and I played it out on our hoop in the basement. I’m pretty sure some of those games with my brother ended with one of us not being too happy, like my son when he stormed upstairs after a disputed foul call. Fun times.

Sunday brought a couple good ones. The Tennessee Iowa game was amazing. The Vols were blowing them out in the first half when we were watching. When we checked back in, it was a 2 point game. There are lessons to be taught here. Not giving up is a big one I tried to reiterate with my son. No matter how much you’re losing by, you can still comeback to win. Playing hard, hustling is another. When those kids were rolling around on the court trying to get that loose ball in OT, I said “that’s the way you do it.” And when the Vols pulled it out in OT, and some of the guys went over to congratulate the Hawkeyes, I told him…”see…you always tell the other guys good game.”

The last one we watched was the Duke game. Even my son at his age can tell what type of player Zion is: a very good one. I’d like to think he’s going to remember these games we watched this weekend. Seeing the coach of Central Florida, Johnny Dawkins, brought back maybe my first college basketball memory. Johnny Dawkins vs Pervis Ellison in the 1986 National Title game when Louisville beat Duke. I remember rooting for Duke…that was before Duke was Duke. Now I regularly root against them even though Coach K is from Chicago. Too much winning syndrome. I was 9 back then; my son will be 7 in 10 days. Maybe…

I look at the title games since then, and can pretty much remember every one. Of course there are some that stick in my head more than others, but it was back in 1986 that the love for college basketball started. I think it will be safe to say that 2019 will be the year my son will trace his back to. I may not have the time or the desire to watch much during the year, but man, when it comes to this tourney… I realize that I still love this game. Maybe I can even watch my son play one day; that would be the ultimate. Sweet sixteen here we come.
