March 21, 2019: 92 Max

Well, that pretty much sucked.  A 2-1 loss to the Flyers put the Hawks season pretty much on the brink, if it wasn’t already.  7 games ago I figured the Hawks would have to win out, 16 games in a row, to get into the playoffs.  If you’ve been reading, I thought the magic number to get in was 95; the minimum number of points that made the Western Conference playoffs last year.  They started great with 5 in a row.  After an OT loss to the Canucks, we could only get to 94.  Now, after this loss to the Flyers, it’s 92 max.  Will that ben enough?

Maybe I shouldn’t look at it that way.  I thought it was an accurate representation of what the Hawks needed to achieve down the stretch to get in.  Yet, a quick look at the standings shows the 2 teams tied for the final wild card spot at 78 points; 4 points ahead of the Hawks.  The next 3 games are against these 2 teams.  So, in that short 3 game window, the Hawks could boost themselves up, but only if they win all 3 games.  Tall task, yep.  Maybe we should just be happy that this season turned this direction, after a dreadful turn after the Q firing.  I’m not there yet.  I still want to make that push.

It’s not going to happen playing the way they did at home against Philly.  Actually, lately the goal tallies have been 2, 2, and 1.  Where has the offense gone?  Part of me thinks the Hawks are running out of gas.  All the effort to get back in the mix this season has drained guys.  But then I think about those Stanley Cup years and all the games we played.  Maybe it’s relying so much on 3 guys that has run its course.  Between Kane, DeBrincat, and Toews, much of the goal scoring has come.  Without them scoring, the Hawks are in trouble.  Then I turn back to the depth of the team; we’ve been here before.  Yes, Strome has been a great pickup and Saad has been solid, but it hasn’t been enough.  Long gone are those days getting contributions from all 4 lines.  That’s one of the reasons the Cup teams maintained their performance over 100 or so games.  This is definitely not a Cup team.  But it is a team that has made strides.  It is a team that has given us a bit of hope that the window with the aging core is not completely closed.  That maybe we can squeeze another Cup out…

Honestly, it’s been a great ride this year; they definitely made it exciting again, and for that, I’m glad.  Yet, I think making the playoffs was a bit too hopeful.  Plus, even if they did sneak in, they would probably get pounded by the better team.  Yet, there’s always Crow who could stand on his head, and if you get in, you never know…  Although Crow let that softy in that ended up being the game winner against Philly, and, well, about getting in…  I’ll be watching Saturday.  Go Hawks!
