What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Jerry Krause? I think of the end of the Bulls dynasty. I blame him and Reinsdorf for it. Although that may be true, what about the 6 rings that we DID win?
Yes, we had the greatest player of all time in Michael Jordan. This is true. Jerry Krause did not draft him. Without Jordan, there wouldn’t be 6 banners hanging from the rafters. This is true also. However, it did take more than just MJ.
Think of his sidekick. When the Bulls got Pippen, we had no idea who this kid was; nobody did, well, almost nobody. Krause did. He saw something in this skinny kid from Central Arkansas. It took a while for it to come to the surface, and yes, playing with the GOAT probably helped too, but Pippen became one of the top 50 NBA players of all time. It was his maturation, his elevated level of play, that helped the Bulls get to the next level. Jordan was always at that level; he needed others to step there game up.
And who else played a big role in the 6 trophies? Phil Jackson of course. Without his coaching, his ability to bring it all together on the court, how many rings would we have? How did Phil get his big shot? Yep, Krause.
I also remember the stories about this great European player; the one that Krause had found. The guy that would come to Chicago and be great. Well, he was right about that too. An important part of the 2nd three peat, Toni Kukoc was legit.
Yes, there was the comment about organizations winning championships, but I read that it was misquoted. Jerry said players and coaches can’t win them alone… It is true. It takes all three to make a thing go right.

At the end of the day, or should I say at the end of the run, the egos became too big. What happened to the 85 Bears in one year, happened to the Bulls after six. MJ felt like he was treated unfairly. Phil felt the same way. Krause was ready to do it without them. Whose side do you think everybody was on? The fact that a blank check wasn’t given to MJ was enough for me to hate the guy.
But, name me another GM in Chicago that has brought us 6 titles. That has to count for something right? Heck yes. It counts for a whole lot. He was the GM, and that was important. He did play a big part in the 90s run. He deserves his due. He deserves to be in the HOF. It’s too bad he’ll get these things after he’s dead.
Isn’t that always the way? Guy dies, and the respect pours out; that respect that was kept on the down low previously. I don’t know… it kind of seems like that with Jerry Krause. I’m guilty of it too.
I did enjoy listening and reading everything about the man’s life. It brought me back to a great time. He was part of the most important chapter of Bulls history; that is without question. He’s won as many titles as all the other GMs in Chicago combined in my lifetime: 1 Cubs + 1 Sox + 3 Hawks + 1 Bears in case you don’t know.
So yes, it took for him to die… it took for me to listen to, and read all about him, to really appreciate him. Yes, I still blame him for the end, but just as with the 6 titles that we did win, he probably wasn’t alone. He was part of the good and the bad, as was everybody else. For Krause sake, thank you. Thanks for all the good Jerry. RIP; hope you enjoy the HOF induction from your seat.

Jerry “sour” Krause…rip. The gm responsible for the Bulls 6 titles as well as their early breakup. That 2nd Bulls 3peat could have been a 5 or 6 peat if those guys were kept together. Egos got in the way, but not before Krause helped the Chicago Bulls win their 6 titles. Individuals do not win championships, teams do. Having the MJ, Pip, and company, Phil keeping the chemistry, and Krause fitting the pieces, that Bulls “team” won 6 titles. Would have been 8 in a row if not for MJ leaving for 2 years. Imagine, the entire 90s decade won by the Bulls? I think it would have been a real possibility, but it is only speculation now. At the end of the day, Krause should be thanked and celebrated for what he did in Chicago. He belongs in the Hall of Fame and will now get there. Sour Krause will finally get his sweet ending. Thanks Jerry!
