In this episode of my Cubs Sox season preview, we’re going to take a look at the outfield.  There will be more changes this year looking in both teams’ outfields… try to keep up.

One of the big moves by the Sox this offseason was to acquire a PED star… I mean, all-star outfielder.  His name is Melky Cabrera.  So are you OK with having an ex-doper in your outfield?  I’m sure you talked trash about him then, but you’re cool with it now?  More importantly, is how will he perform on the field now that he doesn’t have those enhancers working for him.  As long as he puts up the numbers, not sure many Sox fans will care.  Do you blame them?  The center fielder is returning from last year, and is enjoying a newly inked 5 year deal.  Adam Eaton will be patrolling center again this year… as long as he’s healthy.  Yes, you can say that for anybody, but this guy has a history of injury problems.  While on the field, he’s performed adequately.  He seems like a good locker room guy, good teammate, and has the makeup of one of the leaders on the Sox.  The key for him is staying healthy.  I guess the Sox believe he can, re-upping for 5 more years.  The final starter is baby Miggy, Avisail Garcia.  Remember how the Sox got him for practically nothing from Detroit?  Do you know why?  Well, rumor has it, he was sleeping with Prince Fielder’s wife, so the Tigers had to dump him.  Bad for Tigers, Worse for Prince, Good for the Sox.  He was hurt last year too, but this guy looks to have all the makings of a solid hitter.  Now if we can only keep him away from the other players’ wives…  I like the addition of Emilio Bonafacio, who I’m sure will play some outfield; he can be that speedy versatile bench guy that every team should have.  Last projected bench outfielder is JB Shuck… a left handed bat could come in handy pinch hitting late.

In this game of CLR, center-left-right, I find myself asking a lot of questions.  It seems like both of these outfields have plenty of promise… plenty of potential… look promising on paper.  Will there be prospects coming up to strengthen these positions, like McKinney or Almora for the Cubs, or Thompson or spring training beast Hawkins for the Sox?  Or, is what we see what we get?  And is what we see going to get ‘er done?  Who has the better outfield?  I’m going to lean Sox here again.  Does that mean I think the Sox will be better than the Cubs this year?  I sure hope not.  Does that mean that the better of the two Chicago teams will make the playoffs?  I hope so.  I’d be OK with both teams making it…  Which outfield are you running with?
