March 20, 2025: Fantasy Baseball Take One

It’s that time of year… fantasy baseball draft season! I have 2 teams that I “manage” in fantasy baseball: the family league and the money league. The family league was up first… let’s go!

The draft order was announced the day before, and let’s just say my son was very happy with the news. He would be selecting first overall this year! I had to call him as soon as I saw this info. He had a guy on his team last year that he wanted again this year; the only way he would be able to get him, is if he was 1 or 2. Bobby Witt Jr was coming home; Shohei fell into my dad’s lap with the #2 pick. I would be picking at #6.

Since my money league has yet to draft, I didn’t really do a whole lot of research this time around for the family draft; in this one, I typically don’t have to. It’s an 8 team league, and not nearly as many roster spots as the money league, so it’s usually pretty straight forward. Now that doesn’t guarantee anything, it just means there are loads of talent to go around, and… loads of talent (OK maybe not loads, but some) on the wire to pickup if/when you need to. With Judge, Ramirez, and Soto going 3, 4, 5, I was left with a decision. I knew if I didn’t take this guy, he wouldn’t make it back to me. Welcome to Team Fireballers Tarik Skubal!

I like to go out on a limb in these “free” leagues. Don’t get me wrong; I still want to win, but… I can take some chances, that maybe I wouldn’t normally take. Taking a starting pitcher with my first overall pick isn’t usually the way to go, but I felt good about it; sure enough, my brother in law said “damn you” or something like that… he was drafting after me; he ended up taking Skenes. I also took some outfielders early in the draft, which is something I typically do not like doing, especially in the auction league; usually don’t want to spend a lot of dough on a position with the most options, but… I scooped Duran and Chourio in rounds 3 & 4, after I took Lindor in round 2. Away we go…

As we progressed in the draft, there were more and more guys taken out of the blue; some guys I would have never drafted, and some I was planning on drafting later on, where they would typically get taken, but… this family draft is anything but typical. Cubs get bumped up, of course, although they tend to garner a few more bucks even in my auction draft. I did end up getting 1 Cub… Justin Steele; thankfully we didn’t draft before the Cubs’ games in Tokyo… didn’t get the -0.80 hit… haha.

Baseball is officially here for everybody else on the 27th; money league drafts on the 26th… last possible draft day! Time to turn my attention to the auction league and hopefully get a little more research done. Draft time is the best!
