Long before Biggie and Tupac, there was east vs west coast battles. The Celtics and Lakers did battle many times in the Finals, with Boston holding the upper hand for a long time. They were 8-0 vs the Lakers in the Finals until Magic finally got them in 85 & 87. The two teams traded victories in the 2008 & 2010 Finals also. Still, the Celtics have the most NBA titles of all time, actually they’re tied with the Lakers now, but they still have the 9-3 edge in NBA Finals heads up matchups with the Lakers. Similarly, we had the Yankees Dodgers battles in the World Series, which brings us to our next episode of Baseball Seasons 1978.
The Yankees just beat the Dodgers in 77; the two teams would meet again in 78. The Yankees held a 7-2 advantage in heads up matchups with the Dodgers in the Fall Classic, although for many of those, it was east vs east coast, when the Dodgers resided in Brooklyn. The result in 1978 was the same as 1977, with the Yankees prevailing again in 6 games. 1981 was the last time these two teams met, with the Dodgers and Lasorda finally winning. Again though, with the most World Series titles ever, and a 8-3 edge in heads up World Series against the Dodgers, the Yankees are the cream of the crop. Just like Biggie, the Celtics and Yankees proved better time and time again; I guess the East Coast does rule…
The 1978 season was more of the same for the Yankees; crazy. Imagine this: you’re coming off a World Series title, you’re struggling a bit the next season, and you get canned. That’s what happened to Billy Martin. Actually, I think he “stepped down”… lots of drama with those boys, especially between Steinbrenner and Martin; wrong guy to have constant beef with. Yeah, it would be Bob Lemon who took the reins of the defending champs in late July of 1978; he had just been fired as White Sox manager the month before. I guess this was just what the doctor ordered for the Yanks. They would go 50-20 the rest of the way, ending up dead even with the Red Sox after Game 162.

This of course, and I didn’t completely realize this, was the Bucky Dent game. Down 2-0, his 3 run home run off ex-Yankee starter Mike Torrez in the 7th inning at Fenway, proved to be the difference. Reggie added one in the 8th inning, and although the Red Sox battled back in the 9th, Goose Gossage got Yaz to pop up to 3rd base to end it. Classic, classic game.
The Championship Series were both repeats of the year before, with the Phillies and Royals both coming up short. Brett leading the Royals with a 3 home run game against the Yankees wasn’t enough. Schmidt, Bowa, Maddox, Carlton weren’t enough for the Phillies to get past the Dodgers. The LA NY matchup was set. This would be the last time that the same teams would meet in consecutive years in the World Series. That guy again, Bucky Dent would be named the MVP.
Only one more year left in the 70s, before we start to get to stuff I may remember; I think it may still be a couple more years. Thankfully 1979 would feature 2 different teams, in a memorable 7 game series.
