March 2, 2015: Spring Fling

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

And no the title does not imply more Patrick Sharp news…  The spring fling that I’m talking about has to do with baseball.  So, now that we got that straight, are we ready for some baseball?  The weather is not right yet, with a forecast of snow, sleet, rain, then more freezing temps scheduled for this week.  Mother Nature still needs her “practice”; that makes it kind of hard to get into baseball mood.  Yet, I think there are still many of us who are chomping at the bit for baseball season to begin; I know I am.

I looked at the over/under Win totals that Papa Vegas put out there this year for all the MLB teams.  The highest total belonged to the Washington Nationals at 93.  The lowest total belonged to the Philadelphia Phillies at 67.  Any guesses on the Cubs Sox win totals?  I’ll give you a second…. OK, got to go.  The Cubs are projected at 81.5 while the Sox come in at 82.  I think these are both pretty fair.  I think I’d take the over in both cases.

Let’s start with the 81.5 total for the Cubs.  I’m thinking this number is a little inflated, because everybody and their mama likes to bet on the Cubs to win, since they’ve never won.  They’re always a popular pick in Vegas, even to win the world series.  I think it’s one of those things that you want to have that ticket when it actually does happen.  So maybe 81.5 is a little high… that being said, I still like the over.  I’m not the guy who is predicting the Cubs to win the National League Central (yet) like Anthony Rizzo, but I am the guy who thinks they could be .500.  And if they could be .500, and catch a couple breaks…. make a mid year acquisition… have some younger players develop ahead of schedule… then I think they could win 5-10 more games, and that gets you in the playoffs.  So, OVER on the 81.5.

I think the Sox win total is a little high too, yet they are anything BUT the Vegas darling.  They have to be one of the most underappreciated teams in Vegas, heck, if they get that treatment in their own city, why wouldn’t that roll over to the rest of the country.  So although the 82 wins seems high, it’s anything BUT inflated.  That being said, I like the Over here as well.  Arguably, the Sox had the best offseason of any team in the majors.  Now it doesn’t help to have Chris Sale with an injury already, as their starting pitching is still the biggest question mark in my mind, but I think they have done enough to get in that playoff conversation too.  Will they win the AL Central?  Everybody talks about how tough the Cubs division is, and rightfully so, but what about the AL Central?  I think that division will be just as tough as the NL Central this year.  That will make it tough for the Sox to win the division, but… same as the Cubs, I like them to be around .500, and if they catch some breaks, if their new additions pan out, if Abreu avoids a sophomore slump, if they get a surprise starter to step to the plate, I think they could win in that 90 range too.  So, OVER on the 82.

What a difference a year makes.  It’s amazing how quick the Cubs and Sox went from the laughing stock of baseball last year, to two potential playoffs teams this year.  It’s easy to make preseason predictions, and it’s easy to look good on paper.  The game is played between the lines, and by the way, there are 162 of those games to be played.  A lot can happen throughout the season, but there is no denying that this year is going to be exciting.

So we’ll continue to postpone the Cubs Sox battles for now… unless someone throws out the first comment…. and we’ll continue to look forward to BOTH teams doing well this year.  They are in opposite leagues.  We’ll only see each other six times.  What’s wrong with both teams making the playoffs?  Absolutely nothing.  Come on baseball…
