March 19, 2025: Only 160 To Go

OK, round two in Tokyo… it wasn’t as bad as the 10th round for Tyson 35 years ago. Yeah, I didn’t realize it was in this same location that Tyson fought Buster Douglas back on February 11, 1990. Where were you when you found out Tyson lost? I’ll never forget. We were at a monster truck show at UIC when they announced it; we all looked around in shock. The invincible Iron Mike lost?!?! We could not believe it. For the Cubs, it was the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th inning where the Dodgers racked up 6 runs, essentially TKOing this punchless club. Dodgers win another one 6-3.

Maybe I’m being a bit unfair; the Cubs did record 8 hits in this one. It was the 2nd inning where my frustration began today. First and second, one out; PCA at the plate. He lined out to the SS, who promptly doubled Busch off 2nd. The fill in announcer for Boog, who’s about as good as him, said that was unlucky. No, no it wasn’t. It was bad baseball by Michael Busch. You have to know where the SS is positioned. If he did know that, he wouldn’t have took off when that ball was hit… right at him! Poor baseball IQ is more like it. We should have had at least one more AB with a runner in scoring position that inning, although based on what happened in the 3rd… would it really have mattered?

Bases loaded, one out, our prized FA acquisition King Tuck at the plate; he drew a walk. OK, that’ll work. Future trivia question: How did Kyle Tucker record his first RBI as a Chicago Cub? Now you know; remember it. Up steps the guy of the moment, Michael Busch. I’m still pissed off at him for the previous inning, and here he goes… striking out looking; can’t even swing the damn bat. Why do I feel like I’m already done with this guy? Maybe it’s because I can’t believe the Cubs thought it was a good idea to trot him out again at 1B… We’re acting like the Oakland A’s, or should I say Sacramento soon to be Las Vegas A’s. We should have somebody better at 1B; I hear there is a free agent still out there that is familiar with that spot in Wrigley… I know the heart strings are involved there, but I’ll still take Rizzo at this point in his career over Michael Busch every day of the week.

Up next is our star rookie 3B Matt Shaw. What the hell is up with his batting stance btw? And he stands like 2 feet off the plate. He did get his first hit as a Cub… a ground ball off the pitcher’s mitt… haha. Anyways, he had a chance to do some damage in this spot, and… he also struck out. So THIS is our future at the hot corner? Ask me if I’d take Kris Bryant at this point in his career over Matt Shaw… go ahead, ask me. I know KB has sucked/been injured, but… guess who I’d rather have. OK, let’s not jump down Shaw’s throat too early; I’ll give the kid a chance.

0-2… only 160 to go. The Cubs on pace for… 0-162. This is going great, just great. Thank you Tokyo, and thank you Cubs for making the sleep I lost these last 2 days totally worth it. Go Cubs…
