March 18, 2020: The Only Live News

With the COVID-19 bringing the sports world to a halt (and oh yeah, most of our lives), the only live news happening right now is in the NFL; there has been no shortage there. The NFL said we’re not stopping this train for nothing or nobody. The free agent period is here; deal with it!

Let’s take a look at Da Bears… First off, they resigned Danny Trevathan. I’m good with that move. Yes, that officially meant Kwiatkoski was gone, but oh well. Nothing against Nick; I liked him, wish him well with the Raiders. But I like Danny boy… if it was one or the other, easy choice; Pace made the right one.

The next move was the puzzling one. Sure, I know we need help at the tight end position, but washed up ass Jimmy Graham? I mean, the guy didn’t even catch 40 passes with Aaron Rodgers as his QB. Frankly, he didn’t do all that well in Seattle with Russell Wilson. So we think he’ll have his renaissance in Chicago? That’s a stretch. The other guy mentioned was Austin Hooper; he ended up signing a big deal in Cleveland. I’m not mad that we didn’t spend the money on him, but I was disappointed to see an investment made in Jimmy. At the time of the signing, I believe the Bears had 8, 9 tight ends under contract… sounds like the kicking competition last off-season… seriously?

The next couple transactions made me happy. Robert Quinn is coming to the Bears. Coupling him up with Mack and Hicks on that DL… havoc time! Yes, like the Trevathan signing, that meant the end of somebody else’s time here in Chicago, and that person, was Leonard Floyd. I liked Leonard; did he have nice moments? Sure, like throwing Aaron Rodgers down like a rag doll during the NFC North clinching game in 2018. Did he live up to his 1st round potential? No. Will he? Maybe, but it won’t be in a Bears uniform. Again, if I had to choose between the two, the choice would be Quinn. Will it be the better move long term? Time will tell. But it’s the better move right now; I’m OK with that.

Enter Nick Foles… I love the signing. Sure, did I dream of Carr, yes. Did I think Alex Smith would have served this role nicely, yes. But Foles fills this role perfectly. Oh yeah, the role… a guy that is NOT the clear cut starter. A guy that will push Mitch either to his potential or out the door. A guy that has no problem being the backup if that’s what’s in the cards. A guy that can step in at any time, whether that’s at the start of the season, 4 games in, 8 games in, and lead the team to a Super Bowl. Does that automatically mean he should be the starter day 1? Well, I’m still of the opinion that Mitch deserves one more chance. I’m also of the opinion that we cannot waste another year waiting on Mitch to be that guy. So… if he makes the strides this year, great; if he doesn’t, we’re covered. That sounds really good to me. And oh yeah, goodbye Chase Daniel.

There was another guy that found a new home in the NFL, a certain ex-Patriots QB. I don’t know… maybe I’ll blog about it… maybe not. But I had to break up the throwback machine of the 2010 Blackhawks championship season. Although that never gets old, it felt good to talk about some actual today happenings. Next up… the start of March Madness, right? No… damn COVID-19…
