March 17, 2023: Surviving

It’s all about surviving. Have to get through the first round, then hopefully you can make it through the weekend. This survival was not so easy this year. In fact, we saw history. For only the 2nd time in NCAA tournament history, a #1 seed went down. Yep, Purdue went down! Wow, just wow. I didn’t have them to win it all by any means, but I did have them advancing to the Elite Eight; it was the first major hit to my bracket, although it may have hurt others worse. I still can’t believe they lost.

This survival quality applies to the gambling man; would I be able to get through the first weekend? Here’s how I did on my first round plays, that I posted:

Win: Fairleigh Dickinson ML +110

Win: Pittsburgh ML +120

Push: A&M Corpus Christi -4

Win: Arizona State -1

Win: Auburn -1

Loss: West Virginia -2

Loss: USC ML +100

Win: Miami FL -2.5

Loss: Texas A&M -3

Loss: Kent State +4

It was a rough ending to a pretty good start. 5-4-1 on these babies to go along with my unposted plays of SDST -5.5 (WIN), Furman +5.5 (WIN), Arizona State +4.5 (WIN), Iowa State +4.5 (LOSS), and a 2nd bet on Miami -2 (WIN) put me at 9-5-1 in my pre game plays. I say pre game plays because there is that whole other thing with betting at your fingertips, and that’s in-game betting. Maybe I shouldn’t do that… I was 5-10 on those type of bets. Thankfully, I only bet half as much on these plays. So… a rough math calculation puts me at about 1.5 units up thus far; that’s it??? 30 bets later, I’m just happy to have scraped ahead a bit. Onto the 2nd round. Here’s what I have so far:

Furman +6, Alabama -8.5, Duke -2.5, Duke -3, Kansas -3.5, Marquette -3.5, and Baylor PK. I’ll definitely be playing more, and yes, I doubt I’ll stay away from the live betting, but… screw it. This is what makes it fun. Losing is fun? Haha.. the action man, the action. I really, really like Duke, which is why they’ll probably lose. Still mad I can’t bet on UCLA, the whole can’t bet on an Illinois collegiate game thing…

My brackets are still hanging on. I already have 4 sweet sixteen teams eliminated, and 1 elite eight team, but my Final Four is still intact. Out of the six sheets that I’m grading, my wife is actually the leader in the clubhouse after the first round, go figure! Actually, she typically does good with this; she won one year back in the day! I remember my win… Carmelo and Syracuse. The Fab Five almost took me to glory too. Will the Bruins be able to guide me to a title this year???

I love this time of year; did I say that already? Saturday and Sunday will be a little tough early on; there’s another slightly more important tourney going on this weekend with my son swimming in the state tournament. I’ll have updates on the entire weekend coming soon… Good luck!
