I’m not going to lie; the Tuesday and Wednesday play in games that I used to ignore… the games that I thought didn’t count as the start of March Madness… I watched them. I think I’ve finally come around on those Tuesday and Wednesday games. They were exciting; they provided that little spark that normally comes with the Madness. Still, the real deal, the main course, is Thursday. With 16 games covering almost 12 hours… this is one of the best sports days of the year.
Last year about this time, I was looking out the window in my office, wondering what the hell I was doing there. I vowed at that point to not let THAT happen again. No, why on one of the best days of the year would I ruin it by being at work? It would be different if I was walking over to Stocks and Blondes to watch the games and have a few beers; it’s been some years since that. That would suffice one year, but for this year, the plan was to not be at work. I didn’t necessarily have to take the day off, but I definitely was going to work from home. I tried to clear my calendar, ensuring I would be able to comfortably sit my ass on my couch, where I should be, right in front of the TV, locked and loaded. It happened… sort of. There was a meeting proposed the night before for 1130am; you’ve got to be kidding me? I felt like instantly rejecting that meeting, but knowing the subject and purpose, I wasn’t going to get away from this. Well, at least I had about 20 minutes… The meeting lasted the 30 minutes before I was able to get back to the real priority of the day. This lasted for about another hour before going to pickup my son from school; he got out early today. I was able to settle in a bit more when we returned, watching the early action finish up. We got home just in time to see the first big upset of the day when Furman beat Virginia; was that the worst pass ever??? Let the Madness begin!
This was more like it; it’s not Vegas, it’s not hanging at the bar with the guys downing some beers, but it’s taking the time to treat this day right by watching the games, from start to finish. The finish of course was “our team”; our team is UCLA. They would not be threatened like other big schools on this day; they wiped the floor with their opponent. It almost felt like a bye week. They’ll face the last Illinois team left Northwestern on Saturday; if I could bet on it, I would be all over UCLA. They are the team I picked to win it all. They’re not a popular pick, but… at least I didn’t pick Virginia, or for that matter Arizona, who was a two seed like UCLA, but saw Princeton end their tourney. I love the upsets!
Friday would be a bit different. Unfortunately, I had to go to work. Friday, March Madness, St. Patrick’s Day… work… that’s where I want to be. Yeah, I’d have to check the phone to follow the first set of games, but should be back in the mix later in the afternoon. Next time, I need to make sure I’m in front of the TV for BOTH days…
