March 16, 2019: Missing One

I’ve never missed one of my son’s games. 2 seasons of baseball, 2 seasons of basketball, and 2 seasons of floor hockey, there every game. Well, there was that one playoff basketball game when I got the times mixed up… But we missed it together. Yes, the last game in our floor hockey season would be the first game I miss due to my LA work trip. I’m sure it won’t be the last time…

Stuff happens, right? Still, it sucks…missing one…especially this first one, especially because it’s the championship game. But how much impact do I really make on the game as a coach? It wasn’t so much that…I had the game covered from a coaching perspective. I talked to my assistant coach. We went over the game plan. I had another dad lined up to be on the court as the assistant coach. We were solid. It’s more the fact that I wouldn’t be there to watch him play in this big game. He’s had such a great season. 4 hat tricks. We’ve had such a good season. Only one loss, regular season first place. I was hoping I’d get the happy call after the game was over.

I was getting updates from my wife as I paced. We had 2 kids not show up; the 1 really hurt. He was supposed to be our goalie first period; what would we do? He put the smallest kid in goalie; I was ok with that. We talked about that option. Load up the defense. The kid ended up making a nice save, but we couldn’t cash in on our many opportunities. 0-0 end of the first period. 2nd period came and she said our son was in goal. Ok. I knew the last 2 periods would be him and this other kid; either way was fine. I was still pacing when I got another text. Still 0-0 end of 2nd period. Wow.

The third period rolled around. The goals started coming. They jumped out to a 1-0 lead; my son tied it at 1. They took a 2-1 lead; we tied it at 2. They took a 3-2 lead; game over. I couldn’t believe they scored 3 goals on our goalie. Then I found out he put another kid who had never played goalie in there. Wtf?!?

We talked about this. Yes, if we were down by 2 goals or something, so be it; we have to use drastic measures. But there was no reason to do this. I would have never done this. Dammit. I thought it wouldn’t have mattered that I wasn’t there.

My son cried after the game. When I finally talked to him, he was still down. Later, he was fine. He’s still only a kid; he bounces back quickly. Not like me after Parkey missed that kick… Still, it was a tough loss, and that my friends, is the silver lining. This is what will make me move forward, and not regret missing this game even more than I do. He has to feel both sides of it. The big wins and the tough losses. This will make him better I think.

I hope. I’ll talk to that dad about this eventually. I was pissed at first, but am moving on, just like my son has. You can learn a lot from your kids. It was a tough finish to a great season. Next up is baseball; clear my damn work schedule.
