The Northwestern Wildcats went from never making the NCAA tournament to being the only team that is undefeated in NCAA tourney play. How you like them apples?
Well, maybe there is another undefeated team… somebody can check that. It would have to be a team that made the tourney and won it all… each time they made the tournament. If this ever occurred, which I highly doubt, it would have had to be a one year wonder… and then never again made the tourney. Let’s just go with the assumption that the Wildcats are the only undefeated team in NCAA tourney play.
And I picked against them… Yeah, kicking myself for that one, but I thought because Vandy had experience last year, they would have the leg up… yada yada. I actually picked them to beat Gonzaga too! I’ll gladly take the loss for the Northwestern win. Now they need to beat Gonzaga.
They are 11 point dogs right now. A big task no doubt. Could they be up for it? I don’t see why not.
After all, it’s been the year for these type of things to happen. Yes, the Cavs won their first NBA title, which unfortunately I have to mention in this statement. Of course, us Chicagoans know what other curse was broken this year. For Northwestern and Cubs fans, it has been quite the magical run.

Since there are Cubs fans all over the world, I’m sure a good percentage of them aren’t Northwestern fans. On the flip side, I’m betting that a greater percentage of Northwestern fans are Cubs fans.
The category that I fall into is definitely Cubs fan; I’m not necessarily a Wildcat fan. However, in situations like this, when they are the closest thing to a local team that we have in the tourney, and they are doing such a great job representing, of course we need to get behind them. Don’t be a hater.
The marketing is Chicago’s Big Ten team; NW is not technically located in Chicago. They are in Evanston… Usually I’m a stickler about that type of stuff, but in this case, we make an exception. They’re not completely out in the burbs or downstate or in another state claiming to be from Chicago. Chicago’s teams when it comes to NCAAB really are DePaul, UIC, etc. I also mentioned that I love to root for the Illini when it comes this time of year. I’m definitely more of a casual NCAAB fan. I’m not nearly as die hard as I am for Chicago’s pro teams, but it is no doubt, exciting to watch these guys play well.
I caught the 2nd half in the car on the radio; horrible traffic trying to get home by the way. It was a back and forth affair down the stretch. The guys on WGN couldn’t believe the foul at the end of the game, that essentially gift wrapped the win for Northwestern. Not taking anything away from them, they still may have made the winning shot, and they WERE up most of the game, but that foul at the end to their best free throw shooter was definitely a gift. He made them both, and Vandy missed their potential go ahead shot, and that’s that.
The game is scheduled for 3pm on Saturday I believe. Not sure if I’ll be watching, but I will definitely try to; worst case, WGN it is again! It would be absolutely nuts if they’re able to beat Gonzaga and stay undefeated in the tourney. Feeling lucky?

Northwestern finally makes the big dance this year, and what do you know, they win their first game. 1-0! And what is their prize for that, a game against the zags, who have lost only once this year. Do they have a chance? Sure. Do I think they will win? Nah. I dont even think they will cover. Fast forward and we have found out that the wildcats are now 1-1. They lost to the zags but covered the spread. Big no call on what looked to be an obvious goaltend that should have brought the cats to within 3 with a few minutes left. Instead, collins gets teed up and there was a 7 point swing. Not sure why in this day and age, a replay official cannot overturn this, especially something so obvious. Oh well, the cats are out but made their university and fans proud. Congrats on the best basketball year ever for Northwestern! Hope to see you in the big dance again soon.
