March 16, 2015: Madness

Let the madness begin!  This Sunday was selection Sunday, and the field of 64, wait… 65… oh no, 68 teams were selected.  Who will take it all?

Honestly, I’ve watched very little college basketball this year, but… I stil have to fill out a bracket.  $10 is worth the shot.  I mean, you can just pick all the top seeds and get away with it.  As long as you have the winner, which on the majority of sheets this year will be Kentucky, you’ll be in the game.  IF Kentucky wins, and so many people have them, it will be more important who ELSE you have.  Wisconsin, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia, Arizona, Kansas are some teams off the top of my head that may be worth advancing.  It’s the usual suspects.

I’ve had some past success in the Brackets.  I came in the money both years Michigan went to the Final Four… in the Fab 5 days.  I also won some money when Syracuse with Carmelo Anthony took out Kansas in the final.  I watched a lot more back then.  I don’t watch nearly as much now… maybe that’s why I haven’t won crap.  OR, maybe it’s because I always go with the underdog, and this tournament, when it comes to the Final Four, is mostly about chalk.  I hate chalk.

So according to that theory, I will NOT be picking Kentucky.  I’m not sure yet.  I didn’t even watch the selection show yesterday, and have yet to review the brackets.  I like to look at the odds of each game, because you know Papa Vegas is going to get his beak wet here, although that’s only good for the first round games.  I also like to see how they did in their conference tourneys; if they did well, after not doing well most of the season, maybe they’re an early exit… OR, maybe they’re getting hot at the right time; there’s always 2 angles, just like PV likes it.  There is really no angle when it comes to Kentucky.  They’re the best team in the country, and will be trying to go undefeated.  That would be cool, but at the same time, I would love to see them get knocked off.

The best place to be for this first week of the tourney is VEGAS.  I was lucky enough to be out there twice during this time.  Once way back in the day, when DePaul actually made the field of 64.  I proudly wore my DePaul throwback Aguirre jersey as I watched the most boring game of all time, as DePaul took out Dayton; man that was a while ago.  I barely remember the end of the game, and didn’t make it out that night; it was a LONG day… the Mickeys were flowing.  More recently, I was out there for my bachelor party 4 years ago.  That was a blast of course.  I was a little more sober this time around…a  little… although that first day you hit the desert, you try to go 0-60 in a heartbeat… at least that’s how I do it.  Isn’t that the way it should be done in Vegas?

Back at work in downtown, we used to find places to go watch the Thursday games; one Thursday I never made it back to work.  That’s when drinking at lunch was acceptable; it’s March Madness for God’s sake.  After a few buckets, I had to call someone to turn off my PC… there was no way I was going back up there.  There were other times that watching the games at lunch did not involve drinking; that’s where we’re at nowadays.  It’s been kind of busy at work, so… like last year, it may be flipping on the TV in the conference room time.  That way you can watch during lunch, and peek in throughout the rest of the afternoon, all while never leaving the building.  My how times have changed…

It’s a fun time… period.  I hope they don’t increase the number of teams that much more.  There are already teams in there that don’t belong, yet there are always some teams that are NOT in there that DO belong.  How do they always do that?  I guess it’s inevitable.  It gives us something to talk about.  So, fill out that bracket.  So what if you haven’t watched all year like me.  You’ll probably do just as good as anybody else.  Take some chalk, pick your favorite teams, pick some upsets, and overall, have fun with it.  It only comes around once a year.  Let the games begin!
