It’s the first thing I do in the morning, well, after I hit the john. I’ll sometimes do it in my pajama pants; hey, at least I don’t go to the grocery store with them on. The walks are a lot quicker and shorter during the winter; it’s fricking cold out there, especially first thing in the morning, right after you get out of bed. Sometimes the dog wakes me a little earlier than I want to, but that’s OK.. because right now, dog walking is my only exercise.
It’s much more than that. Who will we meet today on our walk? Early in the morning, before 6am, there is usually nobody. The later it gets, the more likely we are to run into somebody. We may run into the lady with the red BMW from England. She is from Europe, so she does love soccer, and is not the biggest fan of baseball and basketball, but… she’s a huge Blackhawks and Bears fan. She goes to a handful of games each year, and when we run into her, it’s all sports talk. Today was about the Sharks and Blackhawks game from yesterday. She thinks they can still win it all this year; I agree. I like running into her, although it does add about 10-15 minutes to my get ready time in the morning.
Maybe I’ll run into my dog’s best friend, Layla. Yeah, her owner is a Clapton fan. My son calls her the big bad wolf, because she IS part American Wolf. She’s a beautiful dog, and my dog pulls me half way down the block to see her. They wrestle for about 10-15 minutes as I talk to her owner, but in the morning, it’s only about 2 minutes, since it’s her mother walking her, and she’s always running late. Cool name though… speaking about names…
What about Wrigley and Fenway, 2 dogs named after the obvious. Or what about Kedzie; somebody thought the street they lived on would be a good name for their mutt. Or maybe Alley, because she was found in an alley, or Honey, who is anything but as sweet as. My favorite is Payton. His owner is another die hard Chicago sports fan, who obviously knows who the best running back of all time is… and loved him enough to name his dog after him. He’s getting old though… not sure how many more times we’ll see him.
Maybe I’ll run into a Packer fan… I know he’s one, but I’m not sure he knows that I know. I know that he knows I’m a big Bears fan with my Bears ski cap on during my fall and winter walks, and the football conversations we’ve had. But I see his son with a Clay Matthews jersey on, and I see him wearing his Milwaukee Brewers shirt… it’s cool though. He’s still a nice guy; let’s keep that a “secret” for as long as possible.

Back to the names, what about my dog’s name Maxie. Where did that come from? She’s actually named after my first car, my 1993 Nissan Maxima. It was a way better name than Tabitha, the name they had given her at the pound. My wife actually suggested that name… I was touched. She knew how much I loved that car, and how I cried when I sold it for $600… but went straight to Vegas that weekend with that money. Now, I only have the pen from the company that I sold her to as a memory, and her license plate… and now, my dog.
Then there’s the people that cross the street when they see us coming. I wonder why people do that. Is it because their dog is nuts and can’t be around other dogs? Is it because they’re scared of the way Maxie looks, possibly part Pit that scares them off? Or, is it because they’re in a hurry and have no time for a 2 minute stop? No matter how tired I am, if I’m in my pajama pants, if I haven’t brushed my teeth yet, or if I’m running late, I’m always good to stop for a couple minutes…
I need to turn this “exercise” into real exercise, and go on runs with her. Maybe now that it’s getting nice outside, I can extend our walks, and work up an actual sweat since it IS my only sporting activity currently. There is a park with a running path only about 4 blocks away… I could make it there. Or I can walk the other way to another small park, and let her run around for a bit; at least she’ll get some good exercise. But then I may miss running into somebody… and if I extend the walks, I’ll definitely have to put on some sweatpants, or in a few months, shorts. Maybe I’ll even have to brush my teeth before I go out, or tie my shoes. God forbid…
Our walk is done for this morning, and now we await the start of the Bulls game at 12pm. Maybe I’ll take her out again before the game starts…. or at halftime… or if I’m really lazy, not until after the game. OR maybe I’ll actually take that jog with her… it was a little chilly this morning, but I’m sure it will warm up. Don’t worry Maxie, I WILL take you out again soon…
