March 12, 2020: Happy Pandemic Day

I think we’ll remember this day for a long time, and not only because it was my wife’s birthday. This would officially become the day the sports world stood still… well, there actually was a lot of activity going on.

NBA season suspended. NHL season suspended. MLB activities suspended. March Madness cancelled??!?!? What the hell is going on? Of course, it’s the good old COVID-19, better known as the coronavirus. Yeah, I joked about it when I first heard of it. I just knew I was immune because of all the coronas I drank growing up. I was like; what’s the big deal? As the day went on Wednesday, I started changing my thinking. When Thursday rolled around, I was a bit in shock. March Madness for God’s sake?!?!

The Bulls and Blackhawks seasons were pretty much over; neither was going to make the playoffs, so no big deal there right? Well, I still liked to watch them; now I won’t even have this opportunity. The delay of the baseball season sucks. I guess Marquee and Comcast will have longer to get a deal done? But March Madness? Cancelling that was brutal. For the first time in my lifetime, there will be no brackets? Something ain’t right with that. Something ain’t right with all of this.

I guess that’s the reason we’re doing what we’re doing. How serious could this coronavirus get? I’ve read stuff here and there about it. People dismissing it because of the low number of deaths. Folks pointing out the previous pandemics of H1N1 and Swine Flu, which both lead to many more deaths. I see stuff about animals being killed, as if they were the blame for this. You see other countries who have been hit harder (thus far), and what they’ve put in place. Should we have taken this more seriously early on?

You see folks saying this whole thing is a hoax… a political move. How crazy is that? All the noise reached peak levels. When Tom Hanks and his wife were diagnosed, more people took notice. When a couple NBA players were diagnosed, it made sense about the suspensions of the seasons. As more and more cases will be made public, this could get even crazier. I knew it would get worse before it got better; maybe I underestimated what “worse” meant? Are we talking quarantine? Are we going to be locked down across the country? How high will the death toll go?

Like I said, this day will be remembered. I was hoping to only remember this for my wife’s birthday. We didn’t have big plans. Workout, mani/pedi, pick up my son, parent teacher conference, then lunch/dinner. It was going to be low key; we would celebrate a little more over the weekend. Now what? As I wrote some words in my wife’s birthday card, I never thought I would write these: Happy Pandemic Day. Well, Happy Birthday anyway babe…
