On this 12th day of March, I’m going to talk about the people in our lives that have to put up with the craziness. The ones that have to deal with this passion. They have to let you get your fix. They enjoy (or at least act like it) going to games with you. They try to be supportive and understanding when your team loses a big game. They try to understand when you’re celebrating the big win. They even support your venture down the sports career dream path. Who’s your passion dealer?
For me, it’s my wife. She chose to deal with this, not always happily, when she said I do. She fed into it long before then…
First year we met, the Bears and Jim Miller were headed to the playoffs. They had a home playoff game at the pre-renovated Soldier Field vs the Philadelphia Eagles. This game came in at #2 on worst games I ever attended, but it was the way I got to attend this game in the first place that is important here. I had no plans on going. I didn’t have the money to get playoff tickets to see the Bears play, but… my girlfriend at the time already knew how much that would mean to me. She lined up in an attempt to win tickets. It was a random type thing, where they all were assigned numbers. Then, they started at X # and proceeded to give the next so many people tickets. She was like the 4th person behind the # they chose. When she told me, I couldn’t have been more excited.

From Cubs Dodgers to Bears Chargers to Bulls Lakers, to a preseason Giants baseball game and a preseason Clippers basketball game, she was by my side. These games didn’t always end in wins, but they sure were fun. There was the Cubs Dodgers game we went to the night after I was detained; where I had to shave my face and wear sunglasses to ensure we got into the stadium without trouble. The Bears game in San Diego where we sat on an exit ramp for about 45 minutes trying to park the car and get into the stadium. The Bulls games in the Staples Center where “we” heckled Kobe, Lamar, and Pau. On our trip to San Francisco, the Giants were playing a preseason game against the A’s. It was raining and she was sick, but we had tickets… I was ready to NOT go, but she insisted. She trooped with me to a game that didn’t even involve MY teams. Then there was the preseason Clippers game vs Phoenix… We were sitting up in the nosebleed seats when someone approached us asking if we were OK with a seat upgrade. Uh, duh, yeah. So we were picked, and shown on the big screen, then escorted to our courtside seats. Best seats I’ve ever had. Too bad it wasn’t for the Bulls, but we did get to see Shaq, who was playing with Phoenix, and Bill Cartwright, who was a coach with Phoenix up close and personal; and we even got a picture with Warren G who was sitting court side too. Regulate baby!
Then there are the road trips, like to Pittsburgh to see the Cubs, to Milwaukee to see the Bulls, which list will only grow from here on out. Oh yeah, and then the only college football game I ever attended was with her. Down in Atlanta for work, she came down to see me for the weekend. The Georgia Bulldogs were in town, and they were playing LSU. She was OK with it! We drove to Athens, scored some $100 tickets outside the stadium, and sat about 20 rows up at the 10 yard line in one of the biggest college football stadiums in the country. It was a great experience.
Not sure if you could tell, but I could go on and on. I have tons of these type of stories, and plan on having many more. But who the heck wants to hear about my sporting activities with my wife… and NO, not THOSE sporting activities. Anyways, I do like to share personal stories that intertwine with the passion for my teams; I have plenty of those, and today is definitely an appropriate day to do so. Happy Birthday babe! My #1 passion dealer. Thanks.
