March 10, 2015: Sibling Rivalry

posted in: Bulls | 1

It was the battle of Gasols last night at the UC.  If you watched the game last night, you know who got the better of that matchup.  It was the younger Marc by unanimous decision over the older Pau as the Grizzlies held on to beat the Bulls.

It wasn’t JUST Marc vs Pau of course, but that was the featured event.  There was Tony Allen, who always plays good in his home town against his home town team.  There was Jeff Green who always seems to play good against us.  There was Zach Randolph, who seems to have been playing in this league forever.  The Bulls made a nice run led by the new dynamic duo of Mirotic and Snell.  These guys were taking turns hitting big shots as the Bulls climbed out of a double digit deficit to tie the game late at 82.  They actually took the lead at 88-84 with just under 6 minutes left, only to score 3 points the rest of the game.  Neither of the Gasols scored in the last 6 minutes, but the damage was done with 15 3rd quarter points by Marc.

The individual matchup started early when Marc was called for a jump ball violation.  This wasn’t the All Star game anymore.  It was on from the start, and it was not pretty.  It has to be tough playing against your brother; I should know.  Your brother knows your every move.  He knows you better than any defender.  He knows your strengths and your weaknesses.  Pau probably spent much of their youth “beating up” on his younger brother Marc.  He probably put him in many wrestling moves and probably beat him a lot growing up; I remember those days.  I also remember those days didn’t last forever.  It came to a point when my younger brother hit back, and it actually hurt.  It came to a point playing against each other, that I wasn’t the one winning most of the time.  He caught up to me… and passed me.  The tables were turned, and that sucked.

I’d much rather play WITH my brother then against him.  That knowing of each other’s moves comes in pretty handy when playing together.  We’ve played on teams together, and have had some pretty good success.  Maybe we have another run or two in us???  Not sure if Pau and Marc will ever play together in the NBA, but I’m sure they’d play great together; kind of like the Sedin sisters in hockey.  That brotherly connection works big time in their favor; I hate them, but they play great together.  After this game, maybe Pau can push for Marc to come to Chicago and join him???

They won’t meet again this year, unless in the unlikely event we meet Memphis in the Finals.  It was a historic year for the brothers, and a historic night for Marc last night.  He’ll have the bragging rights from that night for a long time.  It is what it is Pau; shake it off, and hope you get a chance to redeem yourself.  Maybe you can take that next chapter in the sibling rivalry.
