It wasn’t a pretty start to the Cubs West Coast trip, including a not so promising start to the series in San Diego, but… the Cubs bounced back, won the last 2 games against the Padres, and thanks to the Reds beating the Brewers, are back in first place in the NL Central. I like it.
Let’s start with Tuesday night’s game… another game that I fell asleep during. The only difference in this one… when I woke up, the Cubs were winning… 7-0. Finally, finally a late night win? Yes, yes it was. And who did it? Contreras and Rizzo, and of course one of the hottest players in baseball Patrick Wisdom, but it was the two guys who got into it a few games back, that helped lead the way. In fact, Anthony and Willson are two of the only guys left; Kris and Javy are other two. The only guys on offense left from that 2016 World Series team. You see how this makes the discussion about their future more difficult? These guys were THE guys that helped us X off that huge box on the bucket list. They’re still not half bad today either. It would be another guy from that 2016 team that would help the Cubs win the rubber game on Wednesday afternoon.

Jake turned in a big time performance against the guy who replaced him here in Chicago. I know Jake isn’t the Jake from the first time around; I’m not stupid. But I figured that he would have some left in the tank… he would have some great moments left to show us in a Cubs uniform. Today was one of those moments. Sure, he only lasted 5 innings, but he matched Yu pitch for pitch while in the game, and that’s a pretty big deal at this point in his career. I thought the whole sick thing from last time out was BS, but hey… Jake sure looked healthy today. Then the Cubs bullpen did the rest; did I mention how good they are? I think I have, but I’ll say it again; they’re good… really good. Brothers looked good thankfully, before Tepera pitched 2 shutout innings. Then it was Craig slamming the door in the 9th. It was a big win, a big series win for the Cubs, as they now head home for the 100% capacity crowd at Wrigley for the weekend series vs the Cardinals. Oh baby…
The Brewers, now a half game out, get one more with the Reds, before getting the gift of the Pirates this weekend, so… the Cubs are going to have to keep winning if they want to stay in first. With a 21-10 record at Wrigley, I’m feeling pretty good about that possibility this weekend. Bring it on; go Cubs!
