June 9, 2016: 6 Years Ago

Do you remember where you were 6 years ago today?  Let me help you.  Back on June 9, 2010, the Chicago Blackhawks won their first Stanley Cup in my lifetime.  I remember it well…

It makes me smile.  It makes me feel better about the whole Blackhawks knocked out in the first round of the playoffs this year thing.  That was a memorable run back in 2010.

The first one is always the best I think.  I don’t have multiple Super Bowls to compare, but not sure any could top the 85 Bears.  The Bulls had 6 of them, and they were all great, but that first one… that was the best.  Sox fans have their one with no comparison, and I’m still waiting for my first Cubs one.  As far as the Hawks go, all three of them were awesome, but again, this first one took the cake.

I wasn’t a big hockey fan growing up; I think I’ve talked about this here before.  Out of the 4 major sports, it came in 4th.  With the Hawks on paid TV, I never got a chance to watch them.  It was hard getting into a sport that I didn’t really play, except floor hockey, and one that I rarely was able to watch.  Make sense?  It’s the truth, but when Dollar Bill passed, and the Hawks came back on TV, and they had all these young guys flying around the rink, it was easy to embrace them.

It started a couple years back… that I started watching and following them.  I remember watching how slow they were, and then in a couple of years, how fast they were.  I remember this team getting better and better.  I remember the 2009 playoffs, and how exciting it was.  I also remember how it was men against boys when the Wings smacked us.  I knew we’d be back.

And we were.  2010 was an awesome ride…it started in 2009 of course, and we had just moved back from LA to Chicago.  I was able to watch a lot of those games that year.  The playoffs came and it got even better.

You must eat a balanced generic cialis online meal in order to avoid complications in diabetes. The comeback against the Preds, the domination of the Canucks and Sharks… yes, it all led to this matchup with Philly.

And as the series progressed, the Hawks had their first chance to clinch on this evening 6 years ago.  Could they do it on the road?  I remember they led late.

My dad and brother had come over to my apartment to watch this clinching attempt, and as they led late, we were on the edge of our seats.  Then the Flyers scored to tie it; I let the couch have it.  I think I broke it… no worries, we sold it on Craigslist a couple weeks later.  The game went to OT.

I thought, great… this is great because when the Hawks score, we will be able to celebrate like crazy knowing that it’s over.  Little did we know that wouldn’t be the case.

It wasn’t the case because nobody except Kane knew that puck was in the back of the net.  Nobody really knew it was the Stanley Cup winning goal.  As Kane skated back down the ice and threw his gloves off, we started looking at each other.  Is it over?  Is the puck in the net?  Yes, yes, yes!!!!!!!

One day I’ll write a feature about that season… maybe 4 years from now, on that 10th anniversary.  For now, just one quick blurb… just one quick look at that memorable night that ended the memorable season.  I had checked off something off the list.  I had just witnessed the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup.  I hope there will be more, but there will never be one like this.  The 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks.  Ahhh, yes… still feels good to say.

So you didn’t see it go in, but you saw it slide behind the goalie? Which is it? Haha…

What a great first title to see for the Blackhawks! That young, talented team came together at the right, just got past the preds before smashing the nucks, sharks, and flyers. Sure didnt see Kane’s goal go in, but he knew it was in right away…the bench emptied and guys wanted to make sure before celebrating too much. Sure enough, it slid right by and lodged in the goal. What a Stanley Cup run, and the first of 3 for this ongoing dynasty!
