Saturday morning brought the next game for our baseball team. Coming into the weekend, we were 5-3-1, sitting in the top half of the standings. Yeah, I finally took a peek at those; part of me doesn’t really see the point. Every team makes the playoffs; every team’s focus should be themselves. Whether the team you’re playing is good or bad, it really doesn’t matter. I’m sticking to my game plan for the most part, pitching the kids that are next in line to pitch, shuffling the lineup how I choose, and moving the kids around to different positions on the field. Since I was in there, I did take a peek at our opponents this weekend; they were both good teams. As we watched the kids from the other team take the field on Saturday morning, I noticed they were big… the average height of that team had to be multiple inches over ours. OK, let’s go.
First inning, they went up 2-0. We had one of our best pitchers on the mound; he started a bit slow, but would have escaped only allowing 1 run if it weren’t for the 2nd error of the inning. All good. He didn’t allow another run after the first, pitching two shutout innings in the 2nd and 3rd before we took him out. As for our side of things, nothing in the first, before we scratched out 1 run in the 2nd. Then the 3rd inning happened…
A walk, base hit, RBI groundout, and a groundout to the pitcher, gave us a 3-2 lead; there were 2 outs in the inning. You know that saying “all after two”… well, our boys took it to heart the rest of this inning. A Single, walk, and double brought home 2 more. Next, back to back walks loaded the bases, which brought up one of our best kids. He proceeded to hit the ball over the fence in right center field… GRAND SLAM!!! 6 runs after 2 outs, and 8 in total for the inning!!! The kids went nuts after the grand slam; they all came out of the dugout, jumping around on home plate. This is fun!
We went on to win the game 15-6, capturing our 6th win of the season. We won 3 games the entire regular season last year. It HAS been fun; sure, winning helps a little… One of our coaches who missed the game sent me a text, asking about the results; he said he had seen the standings, and saw they were a really good team. I told him the final score, and told him “the bigger they are, the harder they fall”… haha. Our next game would be Sunday evening, the last scheduled game of the weekend. Let’s do this!
