Yeah, they’re millionaires… I get it. The stars of the Cubs have made plenty of money. These stars have brought us much joy though… Of course, I’m talking about Rizzo, Bryant, and Baez… in particular today, I want to talk a little bit about Anthony Rizzo. While Bryant is having an awesome season, and Baez is every bit of his polarizing self this year that we love and hate, Rizzo appears to me, to be the one player that is being impacted the most by the lack of certainty about his future here with the Cubs. Shit, he’s only human…
You have the president of the Cubs on the radio on Monday morning, out of all days of the week, talking about the Cubs losing money this year… while still talking about the Cubs being potential sellers at the deadline; what a jag off. Anybody with one brain cell in their F-ing head can see this team has what it takes to contend this year… well, almost. Of course, I’m still talking about the starting rotation, and yes, 110% the Cubs need to add there; it would have been nice if they didn’t subtract there before the season. If they do add there, I 110% believe the Cubs can win this division. How does he not see this? Talking about the Cubs being broke… who do you think believes that shit you’re shoveling?
It’s all setting the stage for some difficult times ahead. While one of the richest franchises in the majors should be locking up their “big 3”, it certainly feels that this will NOT be the case. What happened to the Cubs Way? Maybe Theo saw this writing on the wall and knew it was a losing battle from his end… Regardless of which one of the three does not deserve a big money extension based on performance, the fact remains that the Cubs have the money to pay them all. I’ve seen people think that each one of them should be the one NOT to sign at one point or another; I’m the same way… Again, we shouldn’t have to choose, but I have the feeling that the Cubs will. This brings me back to the subject.

Rizzo looked pissed. He made a nice play earlier in the game, but decided to come home when there was little chance to get the runner, instead of taking the out at first; the next batter hit a sacrifice fly scoring another runner instead of it being the third out. Rizzo misplayed a foul pop the other day too… can’t recall if that made a difference or not. You saw Rizzo and Contreras get into it the other day in the dugout; what was that about? Did something ever come out of that? Rizzo has missed time this year with his back, which seems to be a nagging thing over the years; I get it. Rizzo’s #s are down across the board compared to his averages, other than last year’s COVID third of a schedule. His playoff #s throughout this golden era of Cubs baseball aren’t all that great either; a 205 career BA in the postseason… but wait, he did hit 360 in the World Series. My point is, there can be a case made to NOT keep Anthony Rizzo; my point is, I think he feels that. I think that would absolutely be the wrong thing to do.
I love Anthony Rizzo, and while what a player does off the field shouldn’t impact the decisions made regarding his play on the field, it’s hard not to… all the stuff that he does for childhood cancer… But even more than that, the intangibles he brings ON the field. I look at him as THE leader in the Cubs clubhouse; how good of a leader is he? Certainly a fair question. He is A leader, that’s the answer, in a clubhouse that doesn’t seem to have many; maybe I’m wrong. This Cubs team IS not and WILL not be better without him; I think that’s the most important thing to understand… I know I’m right about this. I don’t have to quote all his stats over the years… I don’t have to talk about his gold gloves… to justify how important he is to this team. And I damn sure don’t care about how he did during the COVID year, and whatever struggles he is having thus far this year…
I think the contract, future with the Cubs thing is bothering Rizzo more than anybody. I think if the Cubs extended him, if they started there, we would see a difference. Reading what was said on Monday on the radio… it scares me. It scares me because if a decision had to be made right now, about which 2 out of the big 3 to keep, the odd man out would be our leader. Buckle up for some uncomfortable times… and if the losses start adding up, like in San Francisco this past series, like Monday night in San Diego, things are going to get really dicey. I hope the right decisions will be made, but honestly, I don’t have a lot of faith in that right now; I hope I’m wrong. Go Cubs…
