June 8, 2016: Standings Check

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

Back to Chicago, and back to baseball.  Now don’t get me wrong, I have been paying attention on my vacation.  Now it’s time to dive back in.

Speaking about diving… how about those White Sox?  As I sit here and look at the standings right this very second, they sit at 30-30.  That’s 20 losses in 27 games for anyone keeping track.  It’s been an absolute nose dive.  Say it ain’t so.

It’s time to shake things up, and they have been.  With Danks already a distant memory, the Sox acquired James Shields in an attempt to boost their starting rotation.  I like Big Game James… overall, I think I like the move.  We’ll look past his first start this week, where he was absolutely shellacked.  Not the best way to start off his Sox career, but he should be better… he can’t be worse.  Give it time.

That other acquisition, the off season one that was golden, has turned green.  You know, like that gold chain you buy off somebody on the street, that looks good for a while, but then eventually starts to turn green?  Not like I know anything about that…  But yes, Mat Latos was that street bought gold necklace.  He has joined Danks in that DFA path after just one after another brutal performances.  I guess there was a reason why nobody else jumped on him…

They did beat the Nationals in their season finale, so there is a positive.  At this pace, the 30-30 pace… they’ll finish 81-81…. that’s saber metrics boys….

Let’s look to that other Chicago team to make us all feel better… OK, it won’t make those Sox fans that absolutely hate the Cubs feel any better, but screw them anyways…  41-17… the first team in the majors to 40 wins.  A 10 game division lead.  5 games better than anybody in the majors.  They are good; I think it’s safe to say that.

I’ve kept up with the highlights, and stats throughout the week, and even caught a bit of a game or two.  I saw a bit of Monday’s game in Philly, and I saw Kris Bryant hit the longest foul ball I think I’ve ever seen.  It had to be 450+, as he crushed it into the section where there was like 2 guys sitting… probably getting high.  I mean, it was way up there.  Bryant has been a beast.  I don’t think it’s too crazy or homerish to consider this guy a legitimate MVP candidate.  You may be able to say the same about Rizzo, and of course, you have Fowler and Zobrist having outstanding seasons, but at the end of the day, I think Bryant will be the top guy in this impressive lineup.

They’ve made some moves too, like bringing up Albert Almora and re-acquiring Chris Coghlan from Oakland.  With Soler and LaStella on the DL, the Cubs just go the cupboard and bring up another stud in Almora.  Did you see his throw home in his first start on Wednesday?  Here is another Cub that will be here for a while…  welcome Albert.

So the Sox did sign Morneau also… taking another shot at an over-the-hill veteran.  It seems at this point the Sox are full out panicking, and if they don’t turn it around quickly, Ventura will be out too, which for the record, I think should have been done a long time ago.  And the Cubs… no panic there, just reaching into their phenomenal farm system to bring up another one of their high draft picks… the first one of the Theo era in Almora.  A tale of two teams for sure.

So there’s our standings check, and we’re officially back.  I feel better already.

Sox need to get it together to stay in the race…like the shields move. I do not think anyone in the al central is going to run away with it unless kc gets hot.
The Cubs continue to roll that blue train right along…another series win vs philly. Onto Wrigley south in atl where they look to take out the braves.
Cubs should stay at the top or near it all year while the sox need to fight to stay in the race. Either way, exciting summer baseball ahead.
