June 6, 2023: Vegas Stanley

Have you been watching the Stanley Cup Finals? I didn’t catch much of Game 2 on Monday night; probably a good thing. Yeah, I’ve been on the Panthers train in both games; I’m pretty surprised they didn’t at least split in Vegas. Now, with the series shifted back to Florida for Game 3, they need a W badly. Can they do it?

The Panthers have been the Miami Heat of the NHL. They are another 8 seed beating the odds that made it to the finish line. Same question for both is: can they cross it? Beating the regular season record breaking Bruins in Game 7 in Boston in the first series after being down 3-1 does provide a bit of confidence. Although it looks bleak thus far, it’s not totally out of the question. Although they’ve only given up 2 power play goal thus far, 25 penalties through 2 games?!?! Looks like mixing it up w/the Golden Knights was a strategy, I think it has crossed the line to undisciplined at this point. It helps that Vegas has a crazy good goaltender; did you see that save in Game 1? Yeah, not too shabby. Overall, the Knights are a very good team, I just thought Florida would be faring a lot better thus far. What do they have to do to turn it around? Pulling their goalie in Monday’s bloodbath isn’t great either…

I did watch the opening of Game 1 in Vegas on Saturday; that was pretty cool. In typical Vegas fashion, there was a big spectacle with the “Golden Knight” fighting an opponent on the ice. Lights throughout the darkened arena, showgirls/cheerleaders everywhere… not a bad show; I wonder how much the tickets are. I mean, you’re going to see a show in Vegas anyways, so… why not a hockey game, especially of the Stanley Cup variety? Will there be a Vegas Stanley Cup celebration this year? I’m sure that one would be pretty crazy.

Sure, Vegas isn’t what you would think of as a typical hockey town, and with their home location, I’m sure the visitors have plenty of fans in each of their home games, but… they certainly are having a lot of fun with it.. and the Knights have been really good too… that helps. With the As probably moving to Vegas next, and an NBA team soon to follow, will Vegas become an actual sports town? They already have the Raiders and Golden Knights. It’s always been a sports town of sorts, with March Madness, and all the sports books and betting throughout the years, but to have teams of their own, besides UNLV… I think that would be pretty cool. I’d certainly want to go see my teams play there. Road trip!!!

If for some reason, this series goes 7… we’ll be landing in Vegas the day after. If Vegas wins, we will in all likelihood, be there for the parade. I’ve seen 3 in my lifetime, and although I wouldn’t be rocking any Knights gear, I’m sure the parade in Vegas would be nuts. I’m still not giving up on the Panthers, I’m just saying. Game 3 is up next.
