June 5, 2018: All Time Five

posted in: Cubs | 1

That was one ugly game Tuesday vs the Phillies.  Hendricks got touched up early, and the bats were silent; definitely one to throw away.

It was the return of Jake however…  Of course the Cubs did a nice video tribute, rightfully so.  I mean, this guy… he’s one of my favorite Cubs pitchers of all time.

I was in the car Monday, and I was listening to the Score; they were talking about Jake and about the all-time Cubs starting rotation.  It was a fun conversation; so I think to myself… who are my five?

They discarded all the great old school (really old school) pitchers that the Cubs had; I don’t want to do that… completely.  If you look up the leaders in all time wins, you find Charlie Root with 201, and Mordecai Brown with 188; I’m putting one of them in my rotation.  Root pitched for the Cubs from 1926-1941, while Brown pitched from 1904-1912; both great eras in Cubs baseball by the way.  Each of these pitchers led the Cubs to 4 World Series appearances; maybe they should both be in my all time five?  Let’s take a closer look at the World Series years.

Mordecai was with the Cubs for the 1906, 1907, 1908, and 1910 World Series appearances.  In those regular seasons, he won 26,20,29, & 25 game respectively.  He also won a game in each of the World Series.  Oh yeah, and the Cubs actually won 2 of those years; the only 2 years we had before 2016.  In the 1907 World Series he was 1-0 winning the clinching game via shutout, and in 1908 he was 2-0.  Oh yeah, and he only had 3 fingers!!!  Yes, this is the famous Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown, who I told my son about just the other day.  We went on to talk about Jim Abbott too.  What’s more impressive, pitching with a missing hand or pitching with only 3 fingers on your pitching hand?  Both were pretty damn cool.  So it’s Mordecai in my top five, right?

Root was there for the 1929, 1932, 1935, & 1938 World Series.  He had 19, 15, 15, & 8 wins in those years.  He didn’t win one game in the World Series though; 0-3 all time.  He also gave up one of the most famous HRs in MLB history to Babe Ruth in Game 3 of the 1932 Series at Wrigley; the called shot if you recall.  His all time era is double that of Mordecai’s, and his slim advantage in wins was due to the fact he started almost 100 more games than him in his career.  Yes, I was right.  First member of the all time starting five for the Cubs is Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown.

Thinking back to the all-time win totals… there isn’t 1 guy on there who won 300 games in a Cubs uniform, and with the way the game has evolved, there may never be a Cub who wins 300 games ALL in a Cubs uniform.  I wonder how many of the 300 game winners got all those wins with one club… sounds like another project.  Let’s continue down the path with the current one…One pitcher down, Four to go.  And oh yeah, there was a guy in the 300 win club that pitched for the Cubs…

Pretty cool blog…starting rotation for the all-time Cubs. After that, starting lineup? Hahaha.
Well, I have to agree, based on the info you provided, that 3finger brown would have to be 1 of my starters. I mean, he helped win 2 world series with the Cubs…that should be enough right there. I also agree with leaving root off…sorry, just dont add up. Who will make up my remaining 4, stay tuned…
