June 4, 2016: Through the Desert

The vacation version of the blog carries on, as we say good bye to Las Vegas and hello to California. To get there, we’d have to travel through the desert; it took us over 4 hours total.

It was a hot one, and on our way out, we had to stop at one of our west coast favorites. In and Out burgers are pretty damn good.  We stuffed our faces, then hit the 15 towards LA.

This is sort of starting to feel like my vacation diaries. What the hell happened to the regularly scheduled programming?  Well, it’s on vacation, and you’ll have to live with this until I return.

So back on the 15 to LA… Stopped in Baker, California.  This is the site of a few favorites on that trip between LA and Vegas. Alien Beef Jerky is one. Man has that expanded over the years. There must be more than just us stopping there. 3 for $25 was the deal, and our beef jerky needs were met.  Next was the Mad Greek. We’ve stopped there for breakfast many times on our way to Vegas, but today was just a drive by. Drove through the drive thru and got a large peanut butter shake with a ton of whipped cream. Delicious!  And as we drove off, we past by the worlds largest thermometer.  It read 111!

Food is always a big part of any vacation, at least for my family over the years, just as it is for my family now. Heading to California through the desert, we thought of the spots we would hit. We want to get stuff that we don’t really eat at home too much. So the first stop after checking in was Wahoo Tacos.

I got the Avo Tacos.  When they asked me for my choice of protein, I knew I was in California. Meat!  That’s what they were asking, but I thought by the pictures, it was automatically fish tacos. So I selected my protein, but was glad to see a number of beers on ice at the register. Dos Equis was the call, and our first meal was official.

That was a theme of sorts. Both the fish and beer. Next up was a salmon burger with a local brew in Venice Beach followed by a shrimp burrito from the hood for dinner.  Not counting the free breakfast at the hotel, which was huge especially for my son, (Fruit Loops and waffles every morning!) it was three meals and three fish choices. Mmm mm good.

Yeah, I was checking in on my teams. I saw the Cubs beat the Dodgers 3 out of 4, so when somebody in Venice Beach said Go Dodgers when he saw my Cubs hat, I just chuckled.  The Cubs also beat the Dbacks on both Friday and Saturday.  With Jake on the mound Sunday, they looked for a 9-1 home stand.  Not too shabby.

But not quite back in the matrix yet….some more vacation to go. Man, oh man, do I love vacation. Hope you enjoy reading my blogs about it as much as I love writing them. And don’t worry, we’ll be back in full force soon…

Food is definitely a big part of any vacation. Trying new spots or visiting old favorites makes or brings back good memories.
Cubs finished 9-2 homestand with both losses in Jake’s starts…go figure! The Cubbie blue train rolls along to the east coast…
