The Cubs roll into the halfway house at 42-39. If I told you this before the season, that this would be their record at the halfway point in the season, you would take that right? Unfortunately, after 6 straight losses, and another flat out embarrassing one in Milwaukee on Wednesday, I’m not feeling good… I’m trying to rationalize at this point… trying to talk myself up, cheer myself up… we’re OK, we’re OK, we will be OK… it’s not working… I’m going to keep trying…

Like I said yesterday, 4 games out feels a whole lot better than 6 games out… that being said, 6 games is NOT an insurmountable division lead, especially considering the scheduling… meaning, the Cubs are coming off a brutal stretch while the Brewers have played a bunch of cream puffs, including us apparently… But seriously, we lost 3 out of 4 to the Giants in Frisco, the Mets in New York, and lost 3 straight to the Brewers in Milwaukee. Do you know what all of those teams have in common? They are all first place teams. So there’s that…

The Cubs depth has been crushed by injuries. Instead of having Duffy or Bote come off the bench in a late inning pinch hitting scenario, and yes Bote has done well in that role, we’re looking at a catcher that, well… And no Rizzo doesn’t help… Bryant or Willson not playing here and there… Baez has missed time. This forcing us to lean on Happ, Heyward, Sogard, Ortega, Alcantara, Marisnick… those all sound like bench players to me… have I missed anyone? Ah yes, Joc… Yes, the Cubs need their big 4 to hit, and after doing that roll call of bench players (and Joc), Duffy and Bote don’t sound too bad now do they?

I rarely tripped on stairs, I hadn’t dropped anything discounts on viagra since the ceramic dish, and I rode my bicycle a number of times since the embarrassing bloody accident. The biggest problem, if you have read anything I’ve written in the past few months, is the starting pitching. That slapped us in the face again when Jake couldn’t hold a 7 run lead… Jake is a back of the rotation guy if anything right now; we have a lot of those guys. Only Hendricks stands tall; Alzolay is fine, but he’s young… hoping he can grow into that, because if anything for this Golden Era of Cubs baseball, we haven’t exactly developed any starting pitching from the farm. So what does this all mean?

I’m still standing, well actually sitting here, telling you that the Cubs CAN make the playoffs this year, but we’re going to need help. It’s pretty apparent nobody is going to get extensions this year, and that sucks… knowing that, it makes me want to trade one of them because at least we’ll get something for them… knowing Jed, it will probably be some 16 year old right out of high school… that sucks. So, I say screw it… and flip it around… whatever happens in the offseason happens, but for right now… ADD to this team. Keep the big 4, the solid bullpen, and ADD a starter… find another catcher off the trash heap that is competent… get another starter somewhere… This team, if they can get healthy, if we can add a few pieces, can legitimately make a 2nd half run, no? Who is going to run away with this division? The Brewers can’t play pansies their whole schedule, and their offense sucks against everybody decent, except us of course. The Reds, well, their manager will ensure they don’t climb up, although we may find out otherwise this weekend. The Cardinals… they’ll hang around like they always do, but they certainly don’t scare me. So, the Cubs still do have a chance, yes! Win the division, get into the postseason, roll with Hendricks and the guy we acquire as our top 2 in the rotation, lean on the bullpen, our big 4 get hot… you can’t see it? I know it’s tough right now…

But hey, I’ve cheered myself up a bit, and that’s really the reason I do this… haha. Talk through it… everything is going to be OK. Well, not sure how Ricketts or Jed feel about all this, and unfortunately, those are the only opinions that count… it’s literally now or never for this core… I just hope it’s not too late already…
