We’re always looking for that feeling. That feeling of happiness, satisfaction, relief, or maybe that excited, exhilarating, pinnacle moment feeling. Life is a lot like a baseball season…
I just started reading the David Ross book. I already read The Plan by David Kaplan; I have the Verducci book next up. In Teammate, the David Ross story, it talks about this concept.. about how life and baseball are similar. There are so many failures that we must overcome in our lives, whether it’s the day to day stuff, or bad decisions we have made. In baseball, the best hitters fail close to 70% of the time; the best teams lose 60 games a year. In the day to day grind, it is easy to get down on yourself; the exact opposite is possible too. When things are going well, when you’re on a winning streak, you start to feel like “you’re the man”… now try not to act that way, because you will get humbled really quick.
That’s what happened to Ross in Cincinnati. He was coming off the best year of his career, and got a little full of himself. He and his manager, Dusty Baker, didn’t see eye to eye, Ross went about it the wrong way, and he got cut… just like that. So much for being so awesome…
Yesterday was one of those days. The Cubs win over the Nationals brought that feeling of happiness. Besides the first couple weeks of the season, with all the celebration of 2016, this was maybe the first time that 2017 felt like 2016. With a taylor made double play in their hands to end the game, Daniel Murphy (it couldn’t happen to a better guy) bobbled the ball, and the inning continued. Now, with 2 outs, a Baez single, followed by a LaStella single, followed by a Jay gapper (man I thought Tommy would never make it home), gave the Cubs an improbable victory. What a win!

Yet, 2017 will never be like 2016… even if this game (we’ve said this before) gets the Cubs going… even if the Cubs do start playing better… even if the Cubs do make the postseason… even if the Cubs win it all again. It will be totally different than 2016. Each year is its own struggle. Each championship, and we know this from the multiple Bulls and Blackhawks titles, has its own story. We only have 1 success story for the Bears, Sox, and Cubs. We just found out what that felt like as Cubs fans. It felt damn good, let me tell you. We want more. We want to repeat that feeling over and over and over again.
But life isn’t that easy. There are always twists and turns, ups and downs, triumphs and failures, and always new challenges awaiting. I wouldn’t have it any other way; I think that’s why I love baseball so much. That’s why I love the Cubs like I do.
This year has been a struggle… 40-39 now, still only 1 game out, a bunch of slumps, a bunch of injuries, still hoping… still knowing the best is yet to come. Recapturing that feeling for a day is great. Only 83 more chances to keep it. Go Cubs!

What a great come from behind victory! A double play should have ended the game, but murphy got sticky hands and could not make the turn. Who do the Cubs turn to? Baez, lastella, and jay, and they got the job done. Wade slammed the door shut and you got that feeling that maybe this would be the game that turns things around. Well, pump those brakes once again because it does not seem to have dont it. But it sure felt good when it happened! That W was sWeet, and that is what we hope will be the Cubs 2nd half! GO CUBS GO!!!
